Vanderbilt's three strengths all cracked in Athens, and Ole Miss comes to Nashville next

Jared Curtis was scratched before kickoff at Georgia, the defense gave up 471 yards, and Vanderbilt's own field goal got blocked. Ole Miss visits at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Minutes before kickoff in Athens, Vanderbilt ruled Jared Curtis out with a knee injury he had carried out of the Auburn game, and Clark Lea said the freshman was "not ready to play physically" and was "crushed" about it. Blaze Berlowitz started instead, hit Junior Sherrill for a 60-yard touchdown, and also threw an interception while finishing 12-of-23 for 190 yards. Georgia won 38-14. Vanderbilt is 3-2, 0-2 in the SEC, and the Commodores host No. 9 Ole Miss on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The score itself is not the alarming part. Losing by 24 at No. 2 Georgia with your starting quarterback in street clothes is roughly what anyone would have guessed. What should get a Vanderbilt fan's attention is that the three things this team had been winning with all failed in the same afternoon.

The defense had been the stabilizer. Against Georgia it allowed 471 yards, forced no turnover, recorded one sack of Gunner Stockton, and gave up seven of 10 third downs. Special teams had been a scoring source; this time Georgia's Jordan Hall blocked a Vanderbilt field goal, leaving Brock Taylor 0-for-1. And the quarterback room, already unsettled since Diego Pavia left, went to its emergency option for the third spot start of the season. Lea's postgame read on Berlowitz was genuinely positive, "I'm proud of Blaze. I thought he played with courage," with the decision-making "good" and the ball never in a compromised position. Which is the honest version of where this offense is. It is functional with whoever is available, never quite stable.

Add the Auburn loss, which was Vanderbilt's first defeat of the season, and the arithmetic is simple. The Commodores have lost the first two legs and are one result from an 0-3 start in league play. That matters more than usual because of what last year was. Ten wins and six SEC wins were both program records. Nobody expected that to repeat exactly, but a 0-3 league start would make the question of whether 2025 was a foundation or a peak feel considerably less rhetorical.

Curtis is the whole week

Lea called the knee injury "challenging" but not long-term, and said Curtis has been improving daily in practice. That is the thing to watch all week. Curtis and Berlowitz do not run the same offense, Curtis's version leans on tempo and spread looks that let him throw, so his status does not just change a name on the depth chart, it changes what Tim Beck can call against a top-10 team.

The model has this at essentially a coin flip, 50.8% for Vanderbilt at home against an Ole Miss team that held at No. 9 in the AP poll. That is the model saying the blowout in Athens was mostly about Georgia. Home field, a defense that was dominant for a month, and a kicking game that has swung both ways still add up to a game Vanderbilt can win.

The playoff math is small either way and shouldn't drive the afternoon. A win puts Vanderbilt around 9% to reach the field; a loss drops that branch to roughly 3%, with the projected seed barely moving between the two. Nothing about Saturday makes Vanderbilt a contender. It will tell you whether a veteran defense that got run through in Athens can still take the ball away, whether the field-goal unit can keep its own kicks off the turf, and whether the five-star freshman is back.
