Quinn Henicle took the field in Atlanta on Saturday after being questionable with an undisclosed injury, and completed 8 of 15 passes for 49 yards in a 42-10 loss at Georgia State. Devin Roche broke a punt return 78 yards for the only Old Dominion touchdown of the night. Xavier Esqillion and the Georgia State front spent the evening in the backfield, and the Monarchs never ran a possession that looked like an offense. That is the whole picture heading into App State. A quarterback who is upright but barely throwing, and a front five that cannot keep him that way.
Henicle's health was supposed to be the explanation. He was ruled out before an earlier game due to injury while Ryan Huff filled in for him, and the reasonable read was that the offense would look different once the starter returned. It did not. Earlier in September at Virginia Tech, Henicle was sacked seven times and still threw for a career-high 187 yards and ran for 83 more. He can play behind pressure. He cannot play behind that much of it every week.
The protection problem is structural rather than bad luck. Colton Joseph, who threw for 2,624 yards, rushed for 1,007 and won 2025 Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year, transferred to Wisconsin, and ODU had to replace the entire starting line in front of whoever took over for him. Kody Cook, promoted from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, inherited that rebuild in his first year calling plays, and so far his best offensive answer has been handing Roche the ball and hoping someone misses a tackle. Blake Seiler, meanwhile, is still running the defense that was supposed to buy Cook time, and Georgia State's Cameran Brown instead threw six touchdown passes, a school and Sun Belt single-game record, with no interceptions.

The model gives Old Dominion a 24% chance in Boone, and the arithmetic behind that is not mysterious. Saturday is App State's first Sun Belt game of the season after a 3-1 non-conference stretch, while ODU is already 0-2 in conference play and last in the seven-team East. The Mountaineers get a clean slate. The Monarchs are trying not to fall to 0-3 in a division where Sun Belt coaches picked them second with 73 points and one first-place vote behind James Madison. Those preseason ballots are the measure of the drop, Georgia State scored 42 unanswered points to defeat Old Dominion 42-10.
There is a personal thread in this one too. App State linebacker Keshawn Thomas made 37 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks for the Monarchs in 2025 before transferring, and he will line up against the blockers he used to practice against. If Thomas spends Saturday afternoon unblocked, you will know how this is going by the end of the first quarter.
So watch the line of scrimmage before you watch the score. An Old Dominion win would be a genuine surprise, and it is fine to want one. What would actually tell you something about the rest of October is narrower. Henicle finishing plays from the pocket, a drive that reaches the end zone without special teams supplying the field position, and a sack total that starts with a one. Roche can still break a game open by himself, he passed Taylor Heinicke on the career rushing list last week, but a rebuild that depends on one returning starter producing a highlight every Saturday is not a rebuild yet.
