Kaleb Beasley picked off CJ Bailey in the end zone, and two plays later Isaac Brown ran 70 yards to tie the game. That was Louisville's best moment in Raleigh, and it did not hold. NC State kept moving the ball, finishing with 493 total yards and 373 passing yards against a Louisville defense that scraped together two sacks and three tackles for loss, and Kanoah Vinesett's 28-yard field goal with 5:30 left supplied the final points in a 31-28 Wolfpack win. Louisville entered the game at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, already out of the rankings it held at No. 16 two weeks ago.
That yardage total is the number to sit with. Louisville's 2025 defense allowed 303.1 yards per game, and that unit was the reason Jeff Brohm's program felt stable. In 2026 it operates under first-year co-defensive coordinators Mark Ivey and Steve Ellis, who split the job, while Florida State counters with Tony White in his second year running the Seminoles' defense. Through five games, the Cardinals have not come close to holding the line they set a year ago, and Beasley's interception was the kind of single big play that wins a quarter rather than a game.
Florida State picked a bad week to figure things out. The Seminoles are 3-2 and 1-1 in the ACC after a 38-7 win over Virginia, their first win over a Power Four opponent this season and their first ACC win of the year. Florida State hung 38 points on Virginia, and keeping a quarterback from carving up the middle of the field is precisely what Louisville's defense has not done all season.
The offense is not the worry. Tre Richardson caught 8 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown at NC State, nearly half of Louisville's passing yards. That is both proof he can carry a game plan and a reminder of how concentrated the passing game can get. Isaac Brown (9 carries, 125 yards) and Keyjuan Brown (8 carries, 88 yards and a score) combined for 213 of the team's 231 rushing yards on 17 carries, and Brohm acknowledged in September that Brown had been "dealing with a little bit of a knee, hasn't complained about it." Louisville can score on anybody.
What it cannot do is leave Lincoln Kienholz on the ground. Against Wake Forest, Kienholz threw for 324 yards on 27 of 36 but also threw his first interception of the season and finished with minus-19 net rushing yards on 13 carries, a figure that exists because the line allowed four sacks, including a third-down sack for an 11-yard loss on Louisville's next-to-last possession that was followed by a missed 42-yard field goal. The run game that night produced 75 yards on 38 carries. NC State got him three more times. The pocket is the open question against a defense playing its best football.
One genuinely good sign is that Louisville was flagged just 3 times for 40 yards at NC State. If that holds, the Cardinals have removed one of the two ways they have been beating themselves.
Friday night at home, with the market still on Louisville's side
Florida State at Louisville kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. The model gives Louisville a 63% chance to win, which tracks with the sportsbook line listing the Cardinals as a home favorite of roughly 5.5 to 7.5 points even after Florida State's blowout. There is a reason beyond talent. Florida State's true-road losing streak under Mike Norvell reached 10 straight games with the September loss at Alabama.
The stakes are real without being grand. Win and Louisville's ACC Championship Game chances sit near 11% with a playoff path around 5.4%; lose and those fall to roughly 0.6% and 1%. A third straight loss, at home, to a team with two losing seasons behind it, effectively ends the conference-title conversation in early October. Watch the first two Florida State possessions. If Ashton Daniels is completing throws into the middle of the field at the pace Bailey did, Louisville is in a shootout it has to win with Richardson and the Browns.
Wake Forest at NC State: root for NC State
This result carries a 2.0 percentage-point impact on Louisville's conference-title-game probability.
Saturday at noon ET on The CW Network. Wake Forest is the team sitting in Louisville's way in the ACC standings, and the Cardinals have already lost to the Deacons head-to-head, so every Wake Forest loss trims a direct competitor for a title-game spot. An NC State win pushes Louisville's championship-game odds to about 8.3% rather than the 6.3% that follows a Wake Forest win, a two-point swing, worth checking the score at halftime of your own Friday hangover. NC State is a home underdog here, with a 41% chance of doing Louisville the favor.
Full numbers and the rest of the week are in the interactive guide, and the simulation behind them is explained in the methodology.
