Toledo's defense rebounded after San Diego State lost both running backs

The Rockets are 3-1 and heavy favorites in their MAC opener at Ball State, and the front seven still has a healthy backfield to stop.

Isaac Zay picked off Jayden Denegal and ran it back 67 yards for a touchdown, Andrew Zock got home for a sack, Toledo recovered a San Diego State fumble and turned the ball over zero times itself, and the Rockets turned a 3-0 deficit into a 41-16 win at the Glass Bowl on Saturday. San Diego State finished with 296 total yards and converted 3 of 14 third downs, and its running game produced 48 yards. One week earlier the same defense had given up 261 rushing yards to Temple. That is a real rebound.

It is also a rebound with an asterisk you could see from the stands. San Diego State's top two running backs were both knocked out of the game, Lucky Sutton re-aggravating a high-ankle sprain, Javion Kinnard going down with an apparent left-knee injury in the first quarter, leaving the Aztecs to hand the ball to Jordin Thomas and Josiah Lucas. Toledo's front seven deserves credit for the takeaways and the sack. It does not yet get credit for stopping a healthy backfield.

That is the whole reason Saturday at Ball State matters more than the record suggests. Toledo is 3-1 and now opens MAC play on the road, kickoff at 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+, and the model gives the Rockets about a 94 percent chance to win. The question is not whether they win. It is what the defense looks like while doing it.

What to watch when Ball State has the ball

Toledo's 2025 defense allowed 254.3 yards and 13.3 points per game, and six of those defenders left for the NFL. The replacement unit has swung week to week, looking elite, then poor, then good-with-caveats. Its most accomplished piece is Zock, who arrived from Mercer as the 2025 FCS Defensive Player of the Year with 20 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. The unit has made the plays that decide games, including Temple's two-point try in overtime, which ended when Owls quarterback Ajani Sheppard overthrew tight end Peter Clarke in the back of the end zone. What the unit has not done is grind out a full afternoon against an opponent with its first-choice runners available. Ball State supplies that, and the Cardinals have not beaten Toledo since 2020, which means anything close is itself information.

The offense is no longer the open question. John Alan Richter went 16 of 22 for 284 yards and three touchdowns against the Aztecs, and Mike Jacobs' first team closed nonconference play 3-1 through a coaching and roster overhaul that could easily have cost Toledo a season. The defense is what is left.

The stakes are bigger than a 1-3 opponent implies. MAC coaches picked Toledo third in the preseason poll, behind Western Michigan and Miami, with no first-place votes, so the Rockets are chasing rather than defending position. Win at Ball State and Toledo's title-game odds sit near 87 percent; lose and they fall to roughly 64 percent. The longshot playoff number moves too, about 3.9 percent with a win, under 1 percent without one, but a MAC team is not making the playoff on a Ball State win. The conference math is the part worth caring about.

Western Michigan at Buffalo: root for Buffalo

The model gives Buffalo a 34% chance to win.

The defending MAC champion is the team Toledo most needs to lose games it does not play. Buffalo winning at home puts a loss on Western Michigan's conference ledger directly, and Toledo's title-game odds land near 87.4 percent in that branch versus about 84.8 percent if the Broncos win, a swing of 2.6 points. Buffalo's chance of pulling it off is 34 percent. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Ohio at Kent State: root for Kent State

The model gives Kent State a 25% chance to win.

Ohio is Toledo's regular-season finale opponent and a live East contender; a Kent State upset costs the Bobcats a conference win and nudges Toledo's title-game odds to about 87.4 percent instead of roughly 85.1 percent, worth 2.2 points. Kent State wins this one 25 percent of the time. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
