North Texas takes its new run game to Tulsa as a near pick'em

Jaheim White's four touchdowns and Tayven Jackson's 16-of-18 night buried Houston Christian 63-14. Now the offense travels to a Tulsa team the market likes.

Jaheim White needed 11 carries Saturday. He turned them into 133 yards and four touchdowns, all in the first half, the longest a 47-yard score, and left the field with 12.1 yards per attempt next to his name. Left tackle Johnny Williams IV pointed at the blocking afterward. "Jahiem's a guy, everybody knows that. He kind of gets himself going, but we helped him up front." Tayven Jackson, meanwhile, went 16 of 18 for 270 yards and a touchdown, an 88.9% completion rate that is the second-highest in program history among quarterbacks with at least 10 attempts. North Texas won 63-14.

The rushing line is the part worth carrying into Tulsa. Neal Brown spent the winter and spring building an offense meant to run the ball at teams expecting the run, and through three games it produced 152 yards, 183 yards, then just 82 in the loss at Texas State. White's afternoon is the first time the plan looked like the pitch. It also came against a defense that could not tackle him and a game that was over by halftime. North Texas beat Houston Christian 63-14 in Week 4.

Brown framed the win as a correction rather than a leap. "Something we didn't do last week was kind of calm down, relax and just go play fundamental football, and I thought we did that today, so quality win." Linebacker Zakye Barker described the response to Houston Christian's early scoring, "We had a big challenge from the coaching staff and challenges from the players to be able to respond the right way", which is about as clear a window as you get into a locker room rebuilt almost entirely from transfers. For a roster with that much turnover, a group that answers a bad Saturday on its own is worth more than the 63 points.

The defensive question is narrower than it looks. Texas State ran for 337 yards at 6.9 a carry, with Torrance Burgess Jr. going for 214, the first 200-yard rusher against North Texas since 2022. North Texas held Houston Christian to 222 total yards and shut out the Huskies in the second half. Matt Powledge said his defense would live in a four-man front roughly 65 to 70 percent of the time, with an odd front the rest, and that is the thing to watch in Tulsa is whether four down linemen hold their gaps against a real conference back without the linebackers getting displaced the way they were in San Marcos.

North Texas at Tulsa, Thursday, 8 p.m. CT, ESPN

Tulsa has not beaten North Texas since 2011 and has lost the last three meetings. Brown is not selling that. "We'll find out Thursday night. There's a lot of parity in the American Conference. We have a great test coming up. Tulsa is playing really well." The betting market agrees with him more than with the series. FanDuel opened Tulsa as a 2.5-point home favorite, essentially a coin flip. Fan Watch's simulations are far friendlier, giving North Texas an 88% chance on the road.

One Tulsa detail matters most. Quarterback Baylor Hayes has missed the last two games with a knee sprain, with backup Dexter Williams II starting in his place, and a report citing On3's Pete Nakos said he is expected back for conference play.

The stakes are real. Win and North Texas's conference title-game odds sit near 66% with playoff odds around 13%; lose and those drop to roughly 39% and 3.9%. Those are two alternative versions of Friday morning, not a number that drifts. And it matters more than a normal opener because the hard road work, Navy, then UTSA and Tulane back-to-back in November, is stacked into the second half of the schedule. Banking a road conference win now is what makes that stretch survivable rather than decisive.

Elsewhere in the American and the Group of Five

Temple at South Florida: root for Temple

It's a long shot at 10%, worth about 4.1 points of North Texas's title-game odds. Saturday, 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

Memphis at Charlotte: root for Charlotte

Same mechanism, bigger name. Memphis losing at Charlotte is worth roughly 3.6 points to North Texas's title-game chances, and Charlotte wins that one about 15% of the time. Saturday, 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

Marshall at James Madison: root for Marshall

The model gives Marshall a 7% chance to win. Marshall is a long shot here.

No standings connection here. This one is about the national Group of Five playoff bid. James Madison is the conference champion most likely to take that spot, so a Marshall win would thin the competition, worth about 2.4 points of playoff odds. James Madison wins this better than nine times in ten, though, so treat it as a bonus rather than part of the plan. Saturday, 2:45 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

Liberty at Delaware: root for Delaware

Another playoff-queue result rather than anything touching the American race. Delaware knocking off Liberty happens about 15% of the time and nudges North Texas's playoff odds up roughly 2.0 points. Friday, 6 p.m. CT on CBSSN.

Full numbers are at the Week 5 guide, and the methodology explains how the simulations work.
