Rice handed the ball off and kept handing it off Saturday night, and Fresno State could not get it stopped. The Owls ran for 344 yards and gained 463 total yards, the most rushing yardage the Bulldogs have allowed in a home game since New Mexico put up 345 on them in November 2023. Fresno State won 38-24 anyway, and the reason is the same reason it has won most of the past year. Simeon Harris intercepted Jacurri Brown on Rice's opening drive for his third interception of the season, Tytus Khajavi forced his first career fumble, which set up a go-ahead touchdown, and Fresno State extended its takeaway streak to 10 straight games. Two things were true in the same building. The ball-hawking is real, and the front in front of that rebuilt secondary got run over.
Fresno State goes to Pullman on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Pacific on USA Network carrying a +7 turnover margin that ranks 5th nationally against a Washington State team sitting 120th at minus-4. The Bulldogs also rank 6th in fewest penalty yards per game at 32.5, to Washington State's 68th at 56.8. Add it up and the discipline gap is enormous, and the market still opened Washington State by 1.5, a pick'em, with both teams 3-1 against the spread. The model agrees that Fresno State is right at 50% to win. If the takeaway habit travels and the run defense holds, the discipline edge decides it. If Washington State finds the seams Rice found, none of the tidy numbers matter.
The defense that graduated three secondary starters was the best unit on last year's nine-win team, 10th in FBS in total defense at 285.7 yards allowed per game and 16th in scoring at 18.8, and Nick Benedetto is still the coordinator calling it, with Josh Davis still running the offense under head coach Matt Entz. That continuity is the argument that the yardage slippage is fixable rather than structural. Working against it is that Entz confirmed before the Sacramento State game that starting defensive back Ryan Wilson's lower-leg injury, suffered at USC, would end his season.
Quarterback is the other thing that changed about this team, and it changed in the good direction last week. Fresno State entered 2026 with Jayden Mandal, who missed the 2025 season with injury but had 2024 pass attempts, and Maryland transfer Khristian Martin as its quarterbacks with prior collegiate passing experience. Against Rice he was 22-of-34 for 210 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, added 57 rushing yards, and the one ball he lost on a scramble was recovered by his own team, so the offense had no net turnovers. "Toughness wins. He's gritty. He represents what the Bulldogs are," Entz said of Mandal, and "Our kids trust him... When he does make mistakes, he doesn't make them again," he said afterward. Pullman is the first genuinely hostile road environment that standard has faced.
One note on how much this game is worth. Fresno State's chances of reaching the Pac-12 title game sit near 70% with a win in Pullman and around 34% with a loss. It's the single biggest swing on the schedule so far, and the playoff number moves from about 2% to roughly 7% on the same result. This is the program's first season in the Pac-12, its eighth conference, after leaving the Mountain West with a 66-43 league record and four titles since 2012. Everything the contender case rests on starts Saturday, and it runs straight into the Milk Can against Boise State on October 10 and the Old Oil Can trip to San Diego State on October 17.
There is also a familiar face on the other sideline. Kirby Moore spent six seasons on the Fresno State staff, finishing as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022, the year the Bulldogs won the Mountain West and beat this same Washington State program in the LA Bowl. He knows the building. He knows the standard.
Elsewhere on the board
Three games touch Fresno State's math this week, all of them lightly.
Utah State at Boise State: root for Utah State
The most valuable outside result and the least likely one. Boise State, ranked 22nd, is an 89% home favorite, which leaves Utah State about an 11% chance. A Utah State win costs the team Fresno State hosts next week a conference loss it can't get back. Fresno State's title-game odds land near 54.9% in that branch versus 51.2% if Boise State wins, a 3.8-point gap. Worth checking the score. Not worth planning your evening around. CBSSN, 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
Texas State at San Diego State: root for San Diego State
The realistic one. San Diego State is a slight home favorite at 53%, and because Texas State is a Pac-12 rival Fresno State visits in November, a Texas State loss here is a direct standings gain. About 52.8% title-game odds if San Diego State wins against 50.2% if Texas State does, a 2.6-point difference. The CW Network, 7:30 p.m. Pacific.
Marshall at James Madison: root for Marshall
This result carries a 1.8 percentage-point impact on Fresno State's playoff probability.
Pure national bookkeeping, no standings connection. James Madison is a 93% home favorite, so Marshall's upset chance is about 7%. If it happens, one fewer unbeaten-ish Group of Five résumé stands between Fresno State and an at-large path, roughly 5.9% playoff odds in that branch versus 4.2% otherwise. Fine to leave on in the background at 12:45 p.m. Pacific on ESPNU.
