Boise State's cleanest defensive game meets Grady Brosterhous at his best

The Broncos allowed one 20-plus-yard completion at Western Michigan. Now a Utah State quarterback coming off a career-high 242 yards visits for the Pac-12 opener.

Roman Tillmon picked off Broc Lowry and returned it 22 yards, Mikaio Edward added a sack and two tackles for loss, and the Broncos won 32-7 in Kalamazoo. Maddux Madsen went 16 of 23 for 204 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Matt Wagner. Boise State was a 7.5-point road favorite and won by 25.

That matters because the pass defense had been the season's open wound. Oregon, Memphis and South Dakota all found chunk throws; Western Michigan found one. It also matters because of who Western Michigan is. A MAC team that managed 113 rushing yards and converted 2 of 11 third downs is not the same evaluation as a conference offense with a quarterback playing his best football.

The tidiness extended beyond the secondary. Two weeks earlier Boise State trailed South Dakota 7-0 and then 14-7 in what was the second straight game with a sluggish opening. At Western Michigan the Broncos scored on the first drive and never trailed. Madsen threw no interceptions in the 32-7 win at Western Michigan, and that is a genuinely different quarterback than the one who threw five in the LA Bowl last December.

Utah State arrives playing its best football too

No. 22 Boise State hosts Utah State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT on CBSSN, the first conference game of the school's Pac-12 era. The model gives Boise State an 88.9% chance to win, and the honest read is that this is a heavy favorite against a team it has beaten ten straight times. But both Utah State units the Broncos have to handle just had their best week of the season.

Grady Brosterhous completed 18 of 28 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns against Troy, including a 57-yard strike to Javon Robinson, and he added 89 rushing yards. That is the best game of his career, and the 57-yarder is precisely the play type Boise State's coverage had been giving away before Saturday. Watch how the Broncos handle Brosterhous scrambling; a quarterback who moves is how coverage discipline breaks down late in downs.

The other half is Madsen's streak against a defense that suddenly takes the ball away. Utah State intercepted Troy three times, Brevin Hamblin, D'Angelo Mayes and David Kabongo each had one, with Markie Grant breaking up four passes, one of its most disruptive games of the year. Western Michigan's pass rush never made Madsen uncomfortable, so his clean start hasn't really been stressed.

And nobody in Boise should file this opponent under formality.

A win keeps the season on its intended track. Playoff odds sit at 20.6% with a win here and 8.2% with a loss, and the Pac-12 title-game odds split 75.7% against 47.1%. Those are two branches of the same Saturday, not a number that moves twice. The other reason to want this handled early is the calendar. Boise State goes to Fresno State on Oct. 10 having lost three straight in that series, including a 30-7 home loss last year. A drained fourth quarter or a new injury this week gets expensive fast.

Spencer Danielson is 24-9 with three consecutive conference titles, a 2024 playoff appearance and a contract through 2030, so the standard fans are measuring against is his own. After the opener at Oregon he said his team proved it would battle but refused to call it a moral victory. Boise State got the ball back at its 13 with 2:24 left, picked up one first down and failed on fourth-and-10. Four weeks later, the Broncos are playing like the team that assessment was pointing toward. Utah State is the first opponent that can argue otherwise.

The rest of the weekend

Boise State's playoff case is an at-large case, which means it improves when the teams stacked above the Broncos lose. None of these is worth rearranging a Saturday for.

Notre Dame at North Carolina: root for North Carolina

Third-ranked Notre Dame visits Chapel Hill at noon ET on ESPN. North Carolina wins it about 3% of the time, and that upset would be worth roughly 2.9 percentage points to Boise State's playoff odds by removing an undefeated at-large competitor. Fun to leave on in the background, nothing more.

Marshall at James Madison: root for Marshall

James Madison is the class of this matchup, and Marshall wins this only about 7% of the time, so it is a long shot to hope for rather than anything to plan a Saturday around. A Marshall win at 3:45 p.m. ET on ESPNU would be worth about 2.8 percentage points, because it knocks down a Sun Belt team competing for the same at-large real estate.

Liberty at Delaware: root for Delaware

Friday night, 7 p.m. ET on CBSSN. Delaware wins about 15% of the time, worth roughly 1.8 percentage points on the same logic, one fewer mid-major résumé in front of Boise State.
