Alabama's offensive line is banged up and Mississippi State is 4-0

Two Alabama starting linemen left the South Carolina rout hurt, and the trip to Starkville is a noon kickoff against a ranked, unbeaten Bulldogs team.

Jayvin James limped off in a walking boot in the fourth quarter Saturday, replaced by Tyrell Miller, and left guard William Sanders, whose oblique injury first surfaced back in Week 1, exited late as well, with Mal Waldrep Jr. taking his place. Alabama still buried South Carolina 49-18 at home, because Keelon Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, totaling roughly 400 yards and five touchdowns on the day.

The rest of the afternoon was just as one-sided. Alabama led 35-10 at halftime and scored 45-plus points for a fourth consecutive game, the first time it has done that since 2018. The defense held South Carolina to 3 of 14 on third down. Those are the things a contender does. The run game was the exception, 124 yards on 30 carries after 227, 155 and 247 in the first three games, which is why the health of the line matters more this week than anything the offense showed through the air. Alabama beat South Carolina 49-18 in Week 4.

Kalen DeBoer said only that with James, "we'll kind of see what that looks like here the next couple days", and James's status for Starkville was not confirmed. There's an extra wrinkle. James started nine of his 12 games at left tackle for Mississippi State last season before transferring to Alabama in January. If he plays, he blocks against the program that developed him. If he doesn't, Miller makes his first start in a hostile stadium.

The South Carolina tape says the line can pass-protect when it knows where the danger is. DeBoer said the plan was built around Gamecocks edge rusher Dylan Stewart specifically, "when you got a guy like six on the other side, Dylan Stewart, you're very conscious about that", and credited the line, tight ends and running backs together for executing it. Scheming around one man for one week is not the same as pushing a front off the ball on third-and-2 in Starkville with a backup tackle and a guard playing through an oblique.

Mississippi State is 4-0 and ranked, and Alabama opened as only a 4.5-point favorite. The model gives Alabama a 72% chance, which is a comfortable number and not a safe one. Win and Alabama's playoff odds sit near 71% with SEC title-game odds around 46%; lose and those fall to roughly 51% and 17%. Those are the two branches, not a sequence.

The reason to care extends beyond Saturday. Alabama hosts Georgia the following week, plays at Tennessee the week after and gets Texas A&M in Week 8, with no open date until Oct. 31. A snapped-together line has to survive four straight weeks, not one. Watch the first six or seven handoffs. If Alabama is getting three and four yards on the ground with whoever is at right tackle, the rest of October looks a lot more manageable.

The rest of the board

Three outside games move the needle a little, and one of them is worth actually watching.

Vanderbilt at Georgia: root for Vanderbilt

Georgia is the team standing between Alabama and Atlanta, and a loss here costs the Bulldogs directly in the SEC standings. Vanderbilt winning is worth about 4.9 percentage points to Alabama's title-game odds, 42% if the Commodores pull it off, 37% if Georgia holds serve. The catch is an 11% chance of that happening. Fun to have on in the background at 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network while Alabama plays; not something to plan around.

Florida at Missouri: root for Missouri

The most realistic of the three at 52%, and the mechanism is the same kind of direct standings math. Florida is a conference rival whose losses help Alabama's path. Missouri winning puts Alabama's title-game odds at about 39% instead of 37%, a difference of 2.5 points. 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Utah State at Boise State: root for Utah State

This result carries a 2.7 percentage-point impact on Alabama's playoff probability.

Nothing to do with the SEC. Boise State is a ranked team competing for the same playoff spots, so knocking them off the unbeaten track nudges Alabama's playoff odds to about 68% rather than 65%. Utah State's chance is 11%, and it kicks at 7:30 p.m. ET on CBSSN, long after the day is decided.

Full numbers are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how the simulation gets there.
