Liberty takes its cleanest game of the year into the building Chadwell built

Liberty routed Ball State 51-15, the biggest win of Jamey Chadwell's tenure. Thursday night at Coastal Carolina, on ESPN, it finds out whether that travels.

Ball State led 7-6 in the first quarter Saturday. Then Jamari Person caught a 16-yard touchdown, Bo Reeves hit a 46-yard field goal, Person scored again from seven, Ethan Vasko ran in from four and Kam Davis broke off a 14-yard touchdown run, 31 straight Liberty points, a 23-7 halftime lead, 37-7 in the third quarter and a 51-15 final. A Sea of Red called the 36-point margin the largest of Jamey Chadwell's tenure and Liberty's first 30-point lead since November 2023. Liberty was a 14.5-point favorite. It won by 21.5 more than that.

Deshawn Purdie, whom Chadwell had confirmed as the starter beforehand, completed his first seven throws and finished 13 of 20 for 211 yards and three first-half touchdowns with no turnovers, plus six carries for a career-high 29 rushing yards. It is not the end of the quarterback question. All four quarterbacks played, and Jaylen Henderson went 3 of 4 with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Terron Kellman but also lost a fumble on a bad exchange with a running back. Vasko scored, and freshman Jachin Davis got fourth-quarter snaps. Purdie is clearly the starter Thursday. He is not yet the only quarterback Chadwell trusts, which matters on a night when a couple of bad possessions can't be absorbed by a 30-point cushion.

The run game is the subplot worth the most to a Liberty fan, because it is the thing that went away. Liberty averaged 293.3 rushing yards per game in 2023, 250.7 in 2024 and 194.0 in 2025, a three-year slide in the one part of the offense that defined the program. Against Ball State the Flames hit a season-high 212 yards on 40 carries with 11 different ball-carriers. Kellman had 51 yards on three attempts including a 43-yard run, Peyton Jones nine for 35, Kam Davis three for 26 and the touchdown. Best number of the season, but it came from a crowd and one long run rather than a back who takes over a game. Watch whether anyone claims the load at Brooks Stadium.

Shawn Quinn's defense had its best day too, with 15 points allowed, three sacks, six tackles for loss, and Ball State's passing game held to no completion of 15 or more yards. The leak was on the ground. Ball State's two touchdowns came on 75-yard drives, and TJ Horton ripped four runs of 10-plus yards on his way to 79 yards on eight carries. A defense that can smother a passing game but gives up long, methodical rushing drives is exactly the defense a hostile road crowd punishes.

Chadwell himself didn't sell the result as proof of anything. "Much needed, much needed. Vitamin C, but it's only one week," he said afterward. "Got to turn around and do it again next week." He also declined to promise a repeat. "I wish I could tell you I think we can score 50 every week. But if we will execute and do the things that we are coached to do, I think we can have an explosive offense."

Thursday at Coastal Carolina, 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN

Liberty plays Thursday night at Coastal Carolina, where Chadwell went 39-22 and put together two 11-win seasons before leaving for Liberty. Five current Liberty assistants, Willy Korn, Newland Isaac, Bill Durkin, Cody Ladutko and Tony Washington, worked for him there and followed him to Lynchburg. Half the staff is walking back into a stadium it helped fill. ESPN's SportsCenter on Campus sets up in Teal Town at 5 p.m. with Matt Barrie and Chase Daniel, the second Coastal visit in three seasons; athletics VP Chance Miller called it "so big for us." Conway will be loud and it will be personal.

Betting markets make Liberty roughly a 2 to 2.5-point road favorite over a 1-2 Coastal team. Fan Watch's simulations are far more bullish, giving Liberty an 89% chance to win. The gap between winning and losing here is the biggest number on Liberty's board this week. Win, and Liberty's playoff odds sit at 28%; lose, and they fall to 10%. The conference-championship-game picture barely flinches, 94% with a win, 92% with a loss, because a non-conference result doesn't move CUSA standings. The playoff number moves because at-large consideration for a Group of Five champion runs through résumé and seeding, and Liberty's projected seed improves from 11.2 to 10.4 with the win.

Then the games elsewhere

Four outside results nudge Liberty's playoff odds, all in the 2-to-4-point range. None is worth rearranging a Saturday.

James Madison at Old Dominion: root for Old Dominion

Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+. Old Dominion wins 10% of the time, and that upset is worth +4.1 percentage points to Liberty's playoff odds, the biggest outside swing available. James Madison beat Liberty in the opener and is the kind of Group of Five team that eats into the at-large space Liberty is competing for nationally. Knocking JMU off the unbeaten track helps Liberty's case without touching a standing.

Missouri State at SMU: root for Missouri State

Saturday at 9 p.m. ET on ACC Network. Missouri State wins about 6% of the time against No. 22 SMU, so this is a long shot rather than something to plan a Saturday around, worth +2.9 points in the unlikely event it lands. This one is about Liberty's own schedule. Missouri State is the Week 13 season finale, and a Missouri State team that just won at an ACC opponent makes Liberty's November road trip a better line on the résumé.

Delaware at Virginia: root for Delaware

Saturday at 6 p.m. ET on ACC Network. Delaware wins roughly 18% of the time, +2.5 points for Liberty. Same mechanism, sooner. Delaware hosts Liberty's CUSA opener on October 2. A Delaware upset in Charlottesville raises the value of a game Liberty is favored to win anyway.

Kennesaw State at Arkansas State: root for Kennesaw State

Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The likeliest of the four upsets at 34%, and the smallest payoff at +2.2 points. Kennesaw State hosts Liberty in Week 8, and a road win at Arkansas State makes that October trip count for more.

The full board, with every conditional branch, is at the interactive guide, and the simulation behind the numbers is explained in the methodology.

The honest version of this week is that Liberty's model odds say it should win comfortably, the betting market says it's a coin flip with a nudge, and the last time Liberty looked this good it was at home against a 1-2 MAC team. Thursday night, in front of a standalone national television audience, is where we find out which read was right.
