Oregon has corrections to make before USC

Portland State gives Oregon a chance to sharpen defensive assignments and protection, with a small playoff assist available from Florida State.

Dan Lanning acknowledged that Oklahoma State used defensive looks Oregon had not prepared for, and placed responsibility on his coaches for the execution. On the other side of the ball, Teitum Tuioti said individual assignment failures hurt the entire defense. Oregon lost 39-31 in Stillwater, with problems that reached beyond any one missed play.

The Ducks host Portland State Friday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. Pacific on BTN, with a 99.8% chance to win. Expect the victory. Root for defenders handling their responsibilities together and an offense that can respond when the defense changes its look.

Lanning promoted offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer and defensive coordinator Chris Hampton internally after Will Stein and Tosh Lupoi left for head-coaching jobs. Oregon chose continuity, but familiar coaches still have to supply workable answers. Against Boise State, Lanning praised Mehringer's route designs and Hampton's second-half pressures. The Oklahoma State preparation failures make Friday a chance for the staff to demonstrate a response.

Hampton's defense allowed 237 rushing yards without recording a sack. Caleb Hawkins gained 110 yards on 23 carries, while Wyatt Young caught five passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Oregon could neither contain the running back consistently nor prevent damaging completions. Watch for the front to hold its ground without defenders abandoning the assignments that keep another runner or receiver covered.

Mehringer also needs dependable blocking around Dante Moore. At Oklahoma State, starting left guard Trent Ferguson injured his knee; afterward, Lanning said the injury would probably end Ferguson's season. Douglas Utu missed that game, and Oregon used Tommy Tofi and Kawika Rogers among its alternatives. Those were the circumstances in Stillwater, not a confirmed lineup for Friday. Whoever plays needs to give Moore time to work through a possession.

Moore opened 1-of-7 and took four sacks, but completed all five throws for 80 yards on Oregon's opening third-quarter touchdown drive. He finished with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. That productive series is something to build on. Yet after Oregon took a fourth-quarter lead, Oklahoma State answered with a 12-play touchdown drive, stopped the Ducks on fourth down and recovered the fumbled pitch between Moore and Dierre Hill Jr. on Oregon's final possession. Avoiding interceptions did not secure the finish.

Dakorien Moore started at Oklahoma State after questions about his availability and caught three passes for 45 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown.

Portland State just allowed North Dakota 627 yards, including 291 rushing. A large Oregon total would therefore offer limited reassurance by itself. The Vikings also got 233 passing yards and three touchdowns from Gabe Downing in that loss. Oregon's defenders have reason to stay attentive even if their offense creates separation.

Florida State at Alabama: root for Florida State

Saturday, September 19, at 12:30 p.m. Pacific on ABC. Florida State has an 11% chance to win. An Alabama loss helps Oregon through national playoff competition, with no direct Big Ten standings effect. Oregon's playoff chances are 21.3% with a Florida State win versus 19.5% with an Alabama win, a 1.8-percentage-point advantage. Enjoy an upset bid if it develops; this is a modest bonus, not a result Oregon needs.

The interactive guide has the full forecast, with the methodology behind it.

Oregon begins Big Ten play at USC next week and closes November with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State and Washington in succession. Friday cannot establish how the Ducks will handle that finish. It can give them repeated possessions with sound protection, secure exchanges and defenders staying with their assignments, habits worth taking to Los Angeles.
