Georgia State drove 93 yards for a touchdown at Kennesaw State, added another touchdown march of 80 yards and held the ball for 37:47 in Saturday's 31-17 road win. The Panthers scored 25 consecutive points after a 3-3 tie, making the Owls spend long stretches trying to get their offense back on the field. For Dell McGee, who entered his third season after going 4-20 across his first two, sustained possessions give the turnaround effort something concrete to build on.
Now Georgia State visits UCF on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+. The programs' first meeting takes place at Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando. Fan Watch gives the Panthers a 19% chance to win. It would be an upset worth getting excited about if they can keep drives alive, with UCF still the clear favorite. See the interactive guide for Georgia State's forecast and the methodology for how the odds are calculated.
Cameran Brown supplied 315 yards of offense at Kennesaw State, 253 passing and 62 rushing, but also threw an interception. Georgia State has allowed no sacks and just four tackles for loss through two games. Keeping Brown upright and avoiding lost yardage would let the Panthers keep using both his arm and his legs without repeatedly asking him to rescue third-and-long.
The receivers matter collectively. Ted Hurst departed after leading the 2025 team with 71 catches for 1,004 yards, leaving a substantial share of the passing game to replace. At Kennesaw State, Brown completed passes to nine players, with Rodshaun Dorsey's four catches leading the group; Lanear McCrary Jr. added 101 rushing yards. Those contributions give Georgia State several ways to sustain a possession without requiring one receiver to reproduce Hurst's workload.
UCF can make that harder. The Knights allowed 185.1 passing yards per game in 2025, ranking 22nd nationally, and stand 29th through two games this season, according to UCF's game preview. Watch whether Brown can keep finding different receivers against that defense while protecting the ball. Another set of downs would be plenty worth cheering.
Georgia State retained Hue Jackson to lead the offense while hiring Cam Clark and John Haneline as co-defensive coordinators for 2026. The defensive change addressed a unit that surrendered 208.1 rushing yards per game and allowed opponents to convert 47% of third downs in 2025. Kennesaw State managed only 72 rushing yards and two conversions in nine third-down attempts, following North Carolina A&T's 84 rushing yards and four conversions in 14 tries. The defense has now repeated its improvement in those two areas on the road; keeping UCF behind schedule would help the Panthers get Brown back on the field.
There is a specific opening to pursue. UCF will play without quarterback Alonza Barnett III after his hamstring injury at Pittsburgh, Spectrum reported. Scott Frost had not announced a replacement starter at his Sept. 14 news conference. Georgia State can make that transition harder by stopping early-down runs and forcing passing situations. If the defense does that, Brown's job is to reward those stops with another first down and make UCF wait to get the ball back.
