Wyoming goes to San José State six days after getting shut out in Fargo

Sawvel said his Cowboys got 'out-everything'd' in a 28-0 loss at North Dakota State. Friday night at San José State is where the response has to show up.

Tyler Hughes threw an interception on Wyoming's first offensive play in Fargo, North Dakota State scored a touchdown on the ensuing possession, and the Cowboys never scored. They lost 28-0, and afterward Jay Sawvel didn't bother sanding the edges. "We got outplayed and got outcoached. When you lose 28-0, you got out-everything'd." The numbers back the sentence up. NDSU out-gained Wyoming 407-162 and piled up 23 first downs to Wyoming's eight. NDSU was favored by roughly 17.5 points and one model projected a 30-14 win, so this wasn't an upset. The shutout was worse than projected for Wyoming, even though NDSU's own point total fell slightly below the projection.

That dropped Wyoming to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West, and handed NDSU the inaugural Battle of the Basins trophy in the Bison's first league home game. Now the Cowboys fly to San José State on Friday at 7 p.m. Mountain on CBSSN, with the model giving them about a 25% chance.

The thing that actually swung

Hughes's week-to-week line is the whole offense in miniature. Against NDSU he went 5-of-14 for 52 yards with the interception and carried a season-low 32.3 PFF grade, down from 76.7 a week earlier, and Wyoming converted 2 of 11 third downs. One week he's the best version of Christian Taylor's dual-threat design; the next he's the reason the offense can't leave its own 40. That swing is why Wyoming is unpredictable rather than simply bad. If Hughes throws for 180 and stays clean on third down, the Cowboys are live in a 25% game. If the first quarter looks like Fargo's first quarter, the night is over early.

There is no comfortable alternative behind him. Landon Sims, who tore an ACL last November, finally got on the field in the fourth quarter at NDSU and rushed once for 5 yards without attempting a pass. That's genuinely good news about his knee and almost nothing else. Wyoming has one quarterback it can plan a game around, and his floor is 52 passing yards.

Why the response is the story and not just a cliché

Sawvel has done this before, and recently. After calling an earlier loss an "embarrassment," he banned cell phones pregame and the team held players-only meetings, changes Jones Thomas and others said made the group feel more connected, and the next time out Wyoming won. So when Sawvel says his team got out-everything'd, there's reason to believe he'll do something about the week rather than wait it out. What's unresolved is whether that kind of jolt works twice in a month, and whether it works on a short week, on the road, after a shutout.

The stakes are bigger than one Friday for anyone who has watched this stretch. Wyoming went 9-4 with an Arizona Bowl victory in 2023, then fell to 3-9 in 2024. A loss here makes 2-4 the starting point for the rest of the conference schedule. A win doesn't change the program's arc, but it does keep the Cowboys' autumn from becoming a straight-line continuation of the last two.

The site matters

This is not a neutral destination. Since the series resumed in 2013, Wyoming is 2-6 against San José State and 0-4 in San José. Last year's 35-28 win over the Spartans happened in Laramie. So the modeled 25% isn't pessimism for its own sake; it's a road team at a venue where it has never won in the modern series, coming off its worst performance of the season.

What hangs on the result in the standings is small and worth being honest about. Wyoming's path to the conference title game is a sliver either way. Roughly 5% if it wins Friday, under 1% if it loses. Those are two branches, not a number that moves. Treat this one as a game about whether the Cowboys are still a functioning football team in October, because that's what it will actually tell you.
