Colton Joseph threw two touchdown passes to Jacob Harris in the first quarter, broke a 47-yard scramble for a score in the third, and hit Malachi Coleman for another score, and when Wisconsin's 31-3 win over Michigan State was over he had accounted for every Badger touchdown. The 141 rushing yards made him the first Wisconsin quarterback since 2014 to top 100 in a game. Wisconsin is 4-1, 2-0 in the Big Ten, and has no game this week.
The run game is the one thing the rout did not settle. Jeff Grimes came to Madison promising a physical offense, and in his 2021 season at Baylor with Eric Mateos coaching the offensive line the Bears averaged 219.3 rushing yards per game, 10th in the FBS. Against Michigan State, with Abu Sama held out as a game-time decision, Darrion Dupree and Bryan Jackson II combined for about 83 yards on 26 carries, roughly 3.2 per attempt. Subtract Joseph's legs and the ground-and-pound identity Grimes has preached does not exist yet. That matters because Wisconsin's hardest remaining stretch, at UCLA, home against USC, then at Iowa on Oct. 31, where the Badgers carry a four-game losing streak into the road game, is exactly the kind of run where a quarterback cannot be the whole rushing attack without getting hit too much.
Everything else about Saturday worked. Wisconsin never trailed. It built a 17-0 first quarter on two Joseph-to-Harris touchdown passes and a Gavin Lahm field goal, then Joseph's scramble and Coleman's catch to finish it. Mason Posa and Cooper Catalano combined for 19 tackles with multiple fourth-down stops as Michigan State went 1-of-6 on fourth down. Those sophomore linebackers are the defense's actual foundation. Fickell said the defense "played lights out," and by his count Wisconsin has not allowed a touchdown over its last 20 opponent possessions, dating to the first half at Penn State.
Malachi Coleman was out there too, and he caught the ball that ended the game.
None of this is a verdict on the season. Fickell's first three full years went 7-6, 5-7, 4-8, and his Wisconsin record sits at 17-21 with Grimes and Mike Tressel both back in place, so the systems are the same ones that produced last year. BetMGM's preseason win total of 6.5 is the honest frame. This is a bowl-eligibility rebound story that has gotten ahead of schedule, not a playoff team. The model has Wisconsin at a 3% playoff chance and 10% to reach the Big Ten title game.
Two results worth tracking Saturday
Stanford at Notre Dame: root for Notre Dame
The model gives Notre Dame a 100% chance to win.
Notre Dame wins this 99.5% of the time, so there is nothing to sweat. It is worth 2.0 percentage points of playoff odds anyway. Wisconsin's path at 3% depends on how many teams end up ahead of it in the national pile, and a Stanford upset would add another one-loss résumé to that pile. Wisconsin's playoff number lands near 3.3% if Notre Dame handles it and near 1.3% in the alternative. Those are two branches, not a sequence.
Indiana at Nebraska: root for Nebraska
This is the one that touches the standings directly. Indiana is 7th-ranked and not on Wisconsin's nine-game league schedule, so the only way a loss lands on Indiana's record is for somebody else to put it there. A Nebraska win puts Wisconsin's Big Ten title-game odds around 12.7%; an Indiana win puts them around 9.9%, a swing of 2.7 points. Nebraska wins it 18% of the time, and Wisconsin has no Saturday of its own on which to do that job.
