UAB beat FCS Samford 33-14 on Saturday and shut the Bulldogs out after halftime. Then Alex Mortensen stood up and called his offense "very inconsistent", said his patience with red-zone execution is "kind of running out," and allowed that his team may still be "learning how to win."
That is the team flying to Memphis. UAB is 3-2 and 1-0 in the American, its only league game so far a 24-20 win over Navy, and Saturday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2 is the Blazers' first true conference road trip of the season. The simulation gives them a 15% chance.
Fifteen percent, and why it still matters
The honest framing is that a win here would nudge UAB's odds of reaching the conference championship game to roughly 10%, while a loss leaves them near 1.3%. Neither branch makes this a season-defining Saturday in the standings. What makes it matter is whose game this is. UAB dismissed Trent Dilfer after a 2-4 start in 2025 and promoted Mortensen, its offensive coordinator, to interim head coach, later naming him the program's eighth head coach. His first game in charge was the 31-24 upset of then-No. 22 Memphis, in which Ryder Burton threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Coach and quarterback both arrived, in effect, against this opponent. UAB has held the Battle for the Bones trophy since.
The offense is the variable, not the defense
The Samford shutout after halftime, with Muaaz Byard leading the tacklers and sacks from Tylin Jackson and Marlin Dean, came from the same unit that held ULM to three second-half points. Fans can stop auditioning that unit. Memphis will be a steeper assignment than FCS Samford, but the pattern is real.
The offense is where Saturday turns. Burton's Samford line was 8 of 16 for 115 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking three sacks, with his 43-yard fourth-quarter touchdown to EJ Reid supplying the go-ahead points. It came against a lower-level defense, which is why the Memphis front and secondary will say more about him.
Watch how the passing game is distributed. EJ Reid caught four passes for 65 yards and the 43-yard go-ahead touchdown, while Lamar White, CJ Smith, Ty Mims and Scott Isacks had one reception apiece. One big-play target carrying the night is thrilling and fragile; the rushing rotation spreads work across several backs, and the receiving corps does not. If Memphis takes Reid away, the fan needs to see a second name show up.
Keyon Cox started on UAB's five-man offensive line alongside Barrett Maddox, Donovan Lawrence, Adam Lepkowski and Calib Perez, Payton Kirkland did not appear in the game book's starting offensive line listing, and no return timetable for Kirkland has surfaced in postgame reporting. Memphis arrives off a game in which its defense forced four Charlotte turnovers and Marcus Stokes threw five touchdown passes. A line still sorting out its left side, against that, is the most direct route to the field-goal-heavy, chase-from-behind script Mortensen just warned about.
What a good night looks like
Not a blowout. Touchdowns instead of field goals on the first two trips inside the 25, Burton clean again, and the defense doing against Stokes what it did to Samford quarterback Gabarri Johnson. If UAB gets those, the 15% number stops mattering and the trophy stays in Birmingham. If the Blazers trade field goals for Memphis touchdowns early, the game will be decided before the fourth quarter.
The rest of the Saturday slate does not move anything for UAB. This is the only game to watch.
