Arkansas State kicked a field goal inside the final 10 seconds to beat South Alabama 15-14 in Mobile last October, and that was the second year in a row the Red Wolves won this game that way, they also took an 18-16 decision at home in 2024 on a kick in the last seconds. South Alabama hasn't won in the series since 2023, and Arkansas State leads it 8-6 going into Thursday's 15th meeting. If you have watched this matchup, you know exactly what the fourth quarter tends to look like.
Which is what makes last Saturday's 52-35 win over UL Monroe more interesting than a rout usually is. South Alabama scored twice in the first two minutes, and from there the margin simply sat at 17 points, 31-14 at half, 45-28 after three quarters, 52-35 final, with no fourth-quarter scare. Major Applewhite said flatly after the Tulane loss that the Jaguars had to learn to close road games of that kind, and he refused to treat the performance as a moral victory. UL Monroe is the first game that answers him back.
It is also the softest possible version of the question. Arkansas State is the hard version.
South Alabama at Arkansas State, Thursday, 6:30 p.m. CT, ESPN2
The model gives South Alabama a 43% chance in Jonesboro, so this is a coin flip tilted the wrong way. It is also by far the biggest lever on the Jaguars' season. A win puts their Sun Belt title-game odds near 23%, a loss near 8%. Those numbers describe two very different paths for the rest of the season, not something that rises or falls as this one game unfolds.
Jared Hollins will almost certainly be the quarterback standing there in the fourth quarter. He has made three straight starts because South Alabama has still disclosed no diagnosis or return timetable for Bishop Davenport, out three games with an undisclosed injury, with no updated status reported for this trip. Three missed games with nothing announced is no longer a short-term absence, and it leaves one real cost on the field. Nobody has seen what Davenport's own passing game looks like since backup Devin Voisin took over for him. The single direct look came at Tulane, where he went 22-of-32 for 296 yards and two touchdowns while Brendan Jenkins caught nine balls for 119 yards and a fourth-quarter score and Anthony Eager added a 43-yard touchdown. That offense is not available Thursday, and Hollins has been good enough to make the point mostly academic. Right up until a game comes down to one drive.
The defense is the softer spot. Against UL Monroe, Todd Orlando's unit forced two turnovers and squeezed the Warhawks to 87 rushing yards on 28 carries, then gave up 355 passing yards, 442 total yards and 35 points. Stout against the run, leaky through the air. Arkansas State arrives off a 23-20 walk-off loss at Louisiana in which Trey Owens threw for 206 yards and a touchdown without a turnover, while the Red Wolves' own defense recorded no sacks and allowed 435 yards. Owens will not shred anybody, but he does not hand the ball over either, and a pass defense coming off 355 yards allowed should not want this series' customary two-minute drill.
Root for a two-score lead that keeps growing. Anything closer, and you already know what this series does with it.
Louisiana at Louisiana Tech: root for Louisiana Tech
Saturday, 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+. Louisiana sits ahead of South Alabama in the Sun Belt West, and a loss in Ruston is a straightforward conference defeat on the Ragin' Cajuns' ledger. The kind that opens up the division. Louisiana Tech is a 53% home favorite, close to even money, and the difference is worth about 3.4 percentage points to South Alabama, roughly 15.8% title-game odds with a Tech win, about 12.5% with a Louisiana win. Pleasant, not urgent. Thursday night in Jonesboro is the game that actually decides how your October feels.
