Sacramento State finally gets a road game it can win

The Hornets' trip to Bowling Green is their second true MAC road game since Carson Conklin's wrist injury, and it comes against a 1-4 team picked just above them.

Carson Conklin hurt his wrist during the loss at Eastern Michigan on Aug. 29, the season and conference opener, and has not played since. That makes four consecutive missed games, including the Massachusetts loss, with no return timetable announced. Jackson Sharman has started every game in between. On Saturday the Hornets fly back east for the first time since, to Doyt Perry Stadium against a Bowling Green team sitting exactly where they are in the standings.

Kickoff is noon Eastern, 9 a.m. in Sacramento, on ESPN+. The simulation gives Sacramento State a 41% chance, one of the closest calls this schedule offers.

That number is the whole point. Bowling Green is 1-4 and 1-0 in the MAC after beating Miami (OH); Sacramento State is 1-4 and 0-2 after the UMass loss. MAC coaches picked Bowling Green ninth and Sacramento State twelfth of 13 in the preseason poll. Fresno State and North Dakota State were never going to answer any question except how far the gap runs. This opponent can.

Carter's own explanation is on the line

After the 35-6 home loss to UMass, Alonzo Carter did not hide behind the subdivision jump. "It's our mistakes, and some of the things are undisciplined and out of character," he said, pointing at red-zone trips that produced no touchdowns, and he gave UMass credit as a team that is "not undefeated by accident." Nine penalties for 85 yards backed him up. So did the stat line that should bother Hornets fans most. Sacramento State out-possessed UMass and won the third-down battle, and scored two field goals.

Carter has also been blunter than that. Before the bye he said, "Physically, we don't look like the teams we're playing. That's the hand I was dealt," naming the offensive line and defensive speed. Both things can be true, and Bowling Green is where they get separated. Against a team picked three spots above the Hornets and losing four of five, the physical excuse thins out. If Sacramento State drives the field, keeps the flags down and comes away with touchdowns instead of field goals, it probably wins. If it does the same things it did against UMass, the diagnosis stops sounding like a plan.

What Sharman has to do differently

Sharman has not been the problem so much as the carrier of it. He threw for 221 yards against UMass with no touchdowns and an interception returned for one. Back in Week 1 he completed 18 of 28 for 247 yards and four touchdowns in his first start, Carter noted then that Sharman had taken first-team reps all camp and already knew the system, so the ceiling exists. Every start since has paired real yardage with one play that cost a score.

Watch the first three Hornets possessions. Yards have never been the issue; finishing has. A touchdown on an opening drive at Doyt Perry would be the single most encouraging thing this offense has done since the opener.

The travel itself is the test

Ten of Sacramento State's 12 opponents this year are first-time matchups, and the slate was built with three more Eastern Time Zone trips after Eastern Michigan (at Bowling Green, at Ball State, and at Central Michigan) plus three late-season weeknight MAC games and a Thanksgiving-weekend finale at Hawai'i. Four straight home games and a bye postponed all of that. Nothing about the open week told anyone whether this roster travels; Conklin's wrist got no new timetable either, and Sharman stays the starter by default rather than by decision.

As for Conklin himself, the last real public word came in September, when he was at practice with the wrist and hand in a cast and Carter said he would be back but could not say when. Nothing has updated that. Plan on Sharman at Bowling Green, and for the Ohio game in Week 7 too.

One more piece of honesty about stakes. The MAC title game is off-limits during the transition, so this is not a standings chase. It is a chance at a first FBS win over an FBS opponent, in the kind of environment that has given this program nothing but bad news so far. That is worth getting up early for.
