Kevin Kane gets Minnesota a week after his best plan of the season

Purdue won 24-17 at Illinois for its first Big Ten win since 2023. Now Kane, who coached Minnesota's nickels and outside linebackers in 2025, draws the Gophers.

Charles Correa and Keyshawn Burgos combined to drop Katin Houser on third-and-11, Don Saunders had a tackle for loss that preceded Illinois' missed 32-yard field goal, and John Slaughter intercepted Houser late in the game. Purdue won 24-17 in Champaign, the program's first Big Ten win since 2023. Illinois ran 27 times for 120 yards and averaged 6.1 yards per pass attempt.

Now Kane gets Minnesota. He spent the 2025 season coaching the Gophers' nickels and outside linebackers before coming back to West Lafayette, where he had also coordinated the defense in 2023-24.

One good defensive week follows three bad ones. Barry Odom, who got his first Big Ten win at Purdue, credited "complementary football in all three phases together" and made a point of singling out his coordinator, "I was happy for him... the way the defense played."

Fans have been here before, in a smaller way. Against Wake Forest, Purdue piled up 455 yards and did not turn the ball over, then fell short of the program-changing win Odom said the team and its supporters were chasing. That is why Saturday matters beyond the Kane storyline. Purdue built this schedule around an early concentration at Ross-Ade, seven home games, five of them in the first seven weeks, and only two are left in that window. Minnesota comes now, Washington next week. The front-loaded advantage is nearly spent.

What to watch, specifically, is whether the pass rush and the back end stay linked the way they did on third down at Illinois, and whether Correa, Saunders and Slaughter keep producing plays that end drives rather than just showing up in the tackle column.

The flag count did not improve. The Boilermakers took 7 penalties for 63 yards, with multiple false starts putting the offense behind the sticks, and a team that needs clean possessions to beat better opponents cannot keep handing back yards at the line of scrimmage.

Kickoff is 8 p.m. ET on BTN, and Purdue has designated it the program's annual Hammer Down Cancer game, presented by the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research. A loss would not undo last week; a win would make the Illinois result look less like an outlier and more like a defense that figured something out.
