Pitt hands the 1976 anniversary game to a quarterback with 12 throws at Pitt

Mason Heintschel's torn ACL at Virginia Tech means Holden Geriner is expected to start against North Carolina, with a 5-0 record and a No. 25 ranking on the line.

Mason Heintschel scrambled on third down early in the third quarter at Virginia Tech, went down, and tore his ACL, ending his season after a 10-for-18, 113-yard, one-touchdown night. Holden Geriner came in and went 8-for-12 for 78 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown to Cataurus Hicks, and Pitt won 35-33 on the road when John Love's 36-yard field goal sailed wide left as time expired. Virginia Tech outgained Pitt 499-295 and still lost, because it turned the ball over four times and Pitt converted those giveaways into 14 points while committing none of its own.

So Pitt is 5-0, 2-0 in the ACC, and ranked No. 25 in the AP poll for the first time this season, and its coach is the one applying the brakes. "I think we played average at best, but we're able to come away on the road ... and get a W," Pat Narduzzi said afterward. That is the honest read. The record is spotless; the yardage, the turnover luck and the missed kick say Pitt has not yet played a complete game against a good offense.

North Carolina at Pittsburgh, Saturday noon on ESPN

Pitt hosts North Carolina at noon Saturday on ESPN, in the game built around the 50th anniversary of the 1976 national championship, the centerpiece celebration of a season-long commemoration. The model gives Pitt an 86% chance to win. Keep that number in perspective. ESPN lists Pitt as only a 4.5-point favorite with a 74.5% win probability, so the betting market sees a tighter afternoon than the simulation does. Given who is taking the first snap, lean toward the market's version when you set your blood pressure.

Geriner is a fifth-year transfer expected to start, with stops at Auburn and Texas State behind him. Those 12 relief throws are the whole sample. The encouraging part is that he is stepping into a settled operation rather than a construction site. Kade Bell is in his third season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the same system that produced 277.8 passing yards per game in 2024, 15th nationally. Geriner is learning a job, not a playbook being installed around him. Hicks caught both Pitt passing touchdowns at Virginia Tech on three catches for 63 yards, which gives the new quarterback one receiver he can look for without thinking.

What to watch beyond the quarterback is linebacker Alex Sanford Jr., who left the Virginia Tech game in the second quarter after a tackle attempt, was checked in the medical tent and did not return, with Cameron Lindsey replacing him. Pitt also played Friday night at Virginia Tech, so the Panthers get an extra day of rest before this one. A small thing that matters more than usual in a week of installing a new starter.

History is on Pitt's side in a narrow, specific way. The teams' most recent meeting, Oct. 5, 2024 in Chapel Hill, was a 34-24 Pitt win. Eli Holstein threw for a career-best 381 yards and three touchdowns, Desmond Reid piled up 210 yards of total offense, and it was Pitt's first win at Kenan Stadium in eight tries. Pleasant memories, none of which block a pass rush. This one comes down to whether Geriner can play a clean 60 minutes with the 1976 team watching.

Elsewhere in the ACC

Two games Saturday move Pitt's path to Charlotte, both by the plainest mechanism. They knock down teams Pitt is competing with in the conference standings.

Wake Forest at NC State: root for NC State

Noon on The CW Network. NC State is the home underdog here at a 41% chance to win, so this is the fun one rather than the one to count on. A Wake Forest loss would put Pitt's conference title game odds around 22%, against roughly 17% if Wake Forest wins. A swing of about 5.2 percentage points, the biggest outside result on the board.

Duke at Georgia Tech: root for Georgia Tech

3:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Georgia Tech wins this one about 38% of the time. Duke falling would leave Pitt near 22% to reach the ACC Championship Game instead of about 17% if Duke wins, worth roughly 4.3 percentage points. Georgia Tech also visits Acrisure Stadium in Week 9, so a loss here is a team Pitt plays later taking a hit in the standings.

Full numbers and matchups are in the interactive guide, and the model is explained in the methodology.
