UCF has never played in Stillwater and Oklahoma State has never beaten it

Braydon Nelson is targeted to return for Oklahoma State's first home meeting with UCF, which would finally give a scrambled offensive line real depth instead of another patch.

UCF and Oklahoma State have met twice, both times in Orlando, and UCF won both. Braydon Nelson, who has missed the Murray State and West Virginia games after knee surgery, tested the knee before the West Virginia trip and was held out anyway; Eric Morris said the bye and this UCF game were the specific targets for bringing him back, and that Nelson "could fill in at either place" at left tackle or left guard.

A lineman who can cover either left-side spot is exactly what Oklahoma State has lacked. Oklahoma State's line has spent five weeks being rearranged rather than built. Jacob Sexton's season ended with a leg injury in the opener. By the Murray State game, with right guard Joseph Hanson out, Johnny Dickson III had slid from left guard to right guard and Desmond Magiya had dropped inside to left guard, while the depth chart still listed Magiya and Shaun Torgeson sharing left tackle. Every solution was the next available body.

Torgeson settled it. He was the outright starter by the time Oklahoma State got to Morgantown, with Magiya listed behind him at left guard, and the clearest review of the job came from the other sideline. West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said afterward, "We never got any pressure" on Drew Mestemaker, adding that "when you don't pressure the guy at all... good players like that... are going to beat you." Mestemaker then went for 389 yards and three touchdowns, 274 of them after halftime, and Wyatt Young caught eight balls for 192 yards with gains of 50, 48 and 48, the most receiving yards by a Cowboy since 2021. That is the production the line exists to protect, and it is why Nelson matters as an addition rather than a rescue. If he plays, Oklahoma State would be adding an experienced lineman to a group that is already functioning, which it has not been able to do once this season.

Health has been the quiet variable all along. Entering the Big 12 opener, receiver Chris Barnes was back in the rotation after missing Murray State with the shoulder injury he suffered against Oregon, and Hanson and defensive tackle Iman Oates were cleared or trending toward playing after sitting out that week too. Before that game, Hanson had sat out hurt, Barnes was a game-time decision and Oates was held out as a precaution. Watch the pregame availability report this week with more interest than usual; the interior of this line has been decided by it since September.

The defense has its own reason for optimism. Skyler Cassity made a second-half adjustment away from the three-down front the defense opened in at West Virginia, and Eric Morris described the effect as letting the unit "play a lot more free... settling everybody down... and play extremely fast." Against a UCF offense that has been starting Keyone Jenkins, holding that second-half version of the front for four quarters is the realistic ask.

None of this would register as a story if the Cowboys were still where they were a year ago. Oklahoma State's win in Morgantown ended an 18-game Big 12 losing streak and an 11-game road losing streak, the program's first conference win since 2023. The Cowboys then entered the AP Top 25 on September 27 at No. 19, their first ranking since September 22, 2024, and rose to No. 18 on Sunday without playing. They are favored this week by about 10 points.

A word of caution about that number. The simulation that runs this guide is considerably less sure, putting Oklahoma State's chances at 40% rather than the market's comfortable margin. It also sees a long back half, 16% at Houston next week, under 10% at both Iowa State and Kansas State, so the honest version of this week is that a win here is worth more to the season than the spread suggests and a loss would cost more.

The last time these teams played, Oklahoma State led 14-0 at halftime, scored 27 total yards in the second half, and watched UCF rally for 17 straight. A tying fourth-down touchdown catch by Dylan Wade, a Noe Ruelas field goal inside the final minute, and a final Cowboys pass tipped by Jayden Bellamy, who is still on UCF's roster, and intercepted to end it. Bellamy is one of the few players on either side who was there for it. Oklahoma State brought in more than 80 newcomers and returns only 25 players from 2025. The fans are the ones carrying that memory into Boone Pickens Stadium, which is a decent reason to bring it up on a morning kickoff.

Full numbers are in the interactive guide, and the simulation details are in the methodology.
