Georgia State recovered Northern Illinois' fumbled opening kickoff at the NIU 4-yard line and scored a minute into the game. The Huskies climbed back to 14-14 anyway, then watched Isaiah Stone return a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter, a play that broke the tie and put Georgia State ahead for good. A late fumble and a turnover on downs closed out NIU's final two possessions and ended any comeback. Northern Illinois out-gained Georgia State 432-342 and held the ball 33:11 to 26:49, but converted only 3 of 13 third downs to Georgia State's 6 of 12.
Rob Harley said the same thing himself. "We sputtered in the second half and it came down to finishing. On defense it came down to tackling late," the interim coach said afterward, pointing at discipline and eye placement rather than scheme. NIU officially entered the Mountain West as a football member in July 2026 after finishing its final MAC football season in 2025, so Saturday is the first conference game in program history against anyone but the MAC, the start of an uninterrupted eight-game league schedule with new opponents and real travel.
Why this opponent punishes exactly what NIU does worst
Air Force does not hand anything back. Entering the week the Falcons rank second in the FBS in both rushing offense, at 297.3 yards per game, and time of possession, at 35:58 per game, while Northern Illinois sits 129th in total offense (300.3 yards), 138th in rushing (79.3) and 126th in third-down conversion at 31%. That combination means possessions will be scarce. If NIU gives one away on a kickoff or stalls on third down the way it did in Atlanta, it may not see the ball again for eight minutes.
And the Falcons arrive with their defense peaking. They held Navy to 1 of 11 on third down and controlled the ball 36:01 to 23:59 in a 14-9 win, which is the single most ominous number on the page for a Huskie offense that just went 3-for-13. The model gives Northern Illinois a 29% chance at home. That is a live underdog's number, not a coin flip, and the honest version of the week is that a Huskie win would be the best thing to happen to this program since last December, and it is not something to count on.
What to watch while it happens
Taron Dickens is the reason to turn it on. The Western Carolina transfer threw for 3,508 yards and 38 touchdowns against two interceptions in nine games in 2025 while completing 74.2 percent of his throws, and he has started to look like that player here. He went 28-of-42 for 320 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions at Georgia State, in what RotoWire described as his second game since becoming NIU's starter. Protection, not arm talent, is the variable. If Dickens gets clean pockets and NIU converts third downs at a respectable rate, the Huskies can keep pace with a team that wants the clock.
Defensively, the question is tackling the option without the player who used to clean everything up. NIU had to replace linebacker Quinn Urwiler, whose 141 tackles in 2025 were the most by a Huskie since 1992 and whose 5.92 solo tackles per game led the FBS. Against an Air Force ground game that chews yardage three and four at a time, the missed tackles Harley complained about become first downs, and first downs become drained quarters.
Thomas Hammock resigned in February 2026 after seven seasons to return to the NFL, and NIU promoted its 2025 defensive coordinator to interim head coach, the man who ran a defense that ranked 12th in the FBS in passing yards allowed at 173.9 per game and forced at least one turnover in six of its final seven games. The pass defense he built is the part of this team most likely to hold up. He has not yet gotten a full 60 clean minutes out of the rest of it.
What a win here would be worth
Hold the kickoff, convert on third down, and Northern Illinois can keep Air Force on the sideline long enough to still be playing a live game late in DeKalb. Repeat Atlanta, and the Falcons will take the ball, the clock and the rest of the Homecoming afternoon. A winless team can leave Saturday with the program's first Mountain West win, and it will take the full 60 clean minutes Harley has not yet gotten.
