Andrew Marsh muffed a punt in Minneapolis, Minnesota recovered it, and Bryce Underwood threw interceptions to Aydan West and Zack Harden. There were three turnovers in the second half, and the offense managed just 24 plays for 82 yards after halftime as Minnesota dominated time of possession. A 14-7 Michigan halftime lead became 13 unanswered Minnesota points and a 20-14 loss, Minnesota's first home win over Michigan since 1977 and Michigan's second straight Big Ten defeat. The Wolverines are 3-2, 0-2 in the conference.
Michigan does not play in Week 6. That leaves two weeks to fix the blocking and the ball security that lost that game. Minnesota's front piled up 3 sacks and 7 tackles for loss while holding Michigan to 180 total yards, and most of the Gophers' second-half points came off short fields rather than long drives of their own. The Michigan defense did not lose this game.
Underwood's numbers tell the rest. He went 10-of-21 for 101 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, 4.8 yards per attempt, all season lows. A week earlier against Iowa he had gone 17-for-28 for 276 yards and two touchdowns, both to JJ Buchanan, including a 49-yard score. That Iowa loss included an Underwood interception by Deshaun Lee at the Iowa 2 early in the third quarter.
After halftime at Minnesota, Michigan ran 24 plays for 82 yards and scored nothing, converting only three third downs for the game, and Kyle Whittingham said the run game "was awful today." His larger verdict went further. The results are "unacceptable," "everything's in play", including an evaluation of offensive coordinator Jason Beck, and he called this stretch the biggest challenge of his 40-plus-year coaching career. He also explained why Underwood stayed in over Tommy Carr. He "gave us the best chance to win." That is a coach who has not made a change and has stopped promising he won't.
The locker room is talking the same way. Jordan Marshall, a captain, said there are "going to be changes" because "it's go time," and that anyone soft "is going to get weeded out."
There is something to feel good about. Smith Snowden and Nathaniel Staehling each picked off Drake Lindsey in the first half, Staehling returning his 79 yards for a touchdown and the Minnesota native supplying Michigan's lead. And Rod Moore played roughly 60 defensive snaps against Minnesota, earning a 63.3 PFF grade.
A preseason Big Ten media poll had Michigan fifth in the conference. Five games in, an 0-2 conference start has already put that number out of reach.
So the bye is the story. Beyond that, the math is already unkind. The playoff odds sit near 5%, and running the table from here is a sub-1% path, even though winning out would make a playoff bid overwhelmingly likely. The season's realistic prize is a respectable November and a Penn State game that looks like a different offense than the one Minnesota shut out.
Two weeks of practice are all Michigan gets to build that offense.
