Tony Sterner kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired Saturday night to beat Arkansas State 23-20, his third make of the game after a tying 25-yarder with 5:38 left, and only because Solomon Baggett's 6-yard touchdown run had put the Red Wolves ahead 20-17 in the fourth quarter. Louisiana won its Sun Belt opener. It did not control it. Michael Desormeaux's postgame summary was “Good teams find a way to win”, which is both true and an admission about the hour that preceded the kick.
That's the whole tension this week. Louisiana is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt, and Arkansas State left Lafayette 2-3 and 0-1. Yet the only conference evidence the Cajuns have produced is a one-score escape against that team, and now they go to Louisiana Tech, which is 2-2 and 0-0 entering its first Sun Belt game. Fan Watch's simulations land in the same neighborhood, with Louisiana at 47% to win. Kickoff is Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
What last week actually settled, and what it didn't
Lunch Winfield was the steady part. He completed 18 of 21 passes for 189 yards and added 64 rushing yards with a 2-yard first-quarter score. The kind of clean game that lets everything around it wobble without the offense collapsing.
The backfield answered its own question in the other direction. Darrell Smith fumbled near the goal line in the first quarter and left injured, and JJ Garner ran for 78 yards and the go-ahead touchdown. That's the pattern now. Smith led the backs with 10 carries for 43 yards at Charlotte while Garner scored on a 7-yard run and Anthony Reagan Jr. on a 4-yard run. Louisiana's committee works with or without him, so treat his availability as a detail rather than a crisis.
The defense is the genuine worry. Six tackles for loss against Arkansas State, 92 yards allowed after halftime, and zero interceptions, zero fumble recoveries. Louisiana got behind the line of scrimmage all night and still never took the ball away, which is how a 20-17 fourth-quarter deficit happens. In Ruston that defense also has to tackle Dylone Brooks, who piled up 200 all-purpose yards against Army on a 72-yard touchdown run and a 74-yard touchdown catch, which is the profile of a back who ends games on two snaps rather than grinding them out.
Sun Belt coaches picked Louisiana second in the West behind Troy, with 75 points and one first-place vote to Troy's 96. Winning in Ruston would put the Cajuns at 2-0 in conference and raise their simulated odds of reaching the Sun Belt title game to 67%. Losing drops them to 24%. Those are two branches of the same Saturday, not a number moving, but they are far apart, and nothing else on the slate comes close to mattering as much.
The rest of the board
South Alabama at Arkansas State: root for Arkansas State
Arkansas State is 57% to win at home Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The mechanism is plain conference arithmetic. South Alabama is a West rival Louisiana does not see until Week 10, so a loss on its record now is a loss Louisiana never has to inflict itself. Arkansas State winning is worth about 4.6 percentage points of Louisiana's title-game odds. The best outside result available this week.
Southern Miss at Troy: root for Southern Miss
It just isn't likely. Southern Miss is 20% to win Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Worth about 1.9 percentage points if it happens. Troy is the preseason West favorite, so an upset would help, and the Cajuns get their own crack at the Trojans in Lafayette next week regardless.
Full numbers and alternate outcomes are in the interactive guide, and the simulation details are explained in the methodology.
