Kukuk's cleanest game ended with an ankle injury and Sun Belt play starts now

Trey Kukuk threw 16-of-22 for 185 yards against Army, then left with an ankle injury days before Louisiana Tech's first Sun Belt home game against Louisiana.

Trey Kukuk went 16 of 22 for 185 yards with no interceptions in Louisiana Tech's 31-29 win over Army on Saturday night in Ruston, and then limped off late in the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury the staff had not graded by the final whistle. Dylone Brooks supplied the fireworks around him, 119 rushing yards with a 72-yard touchdown, plus a 74-yard touchdown catch on a Kukuk lateral that receiver Marcus Calwise Jr. threw, and Sonny Cumbie credited Nathan Young for a "tremendous call" on the gadget score. Army still drove to cut it to 31-29 with 1:07 left, and Tech had to recover the onside kick to keep the ball out of Army's hands.

That win moved the Bulldogs to 2-2 and snapped back-to-back road losses at LSU (45-14) and Baylor (36-19), and it was Tech's first win over Army in four all-time meetings. The relevant part for this week is narrower than the record, though. Young took over as offensive coordinator and play caller after Tony Franklin retired, inheriting a run-first offense and spending four games trying to add a dependable drop-back passing game to it. Against Army he finally got one. There were no interceptions, 40 rushing yards from the quarterback, and an untouched run game. The caveat is that Kukuk still did not throw a touchdown pass; the only one came from Calwise on the trick play, so the case rests on efficiency and ball security rather than production through the air.

And the man who delivered it may not play. Kukuk's ankle was examined Saturday night and he will undergo further tests to determine severity; if he cannot go, Tech turns to Blake Baker or Mason Welch. Baker opened the season as the starter, fractured his hand after the LSU loss and was ruled out at Baylor, which is how Kukuk got the job in the first place. So what Tech needs Saturday is narrow. It is a Kukuk ankle that holds up for four quarters, and the same 20-plus-attempt game with zero giveaways against a defense that has seen Sun Belt film on Brooks.

The defense is the other thing to watch, and it is not trending the right way. Tech forced one takeaway, a Jordan McRae interception, and recorded a single sack while Army piled up 421 total yards; Kolbe Fields and Jadon Mayfield tied for a game-high 13 tackles each. One more quiet afternoon like that and the margin for a shaky quarterback situation disappears.

Louisiana at Louisiana Tech, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. CT, ESPN+

Louisiana comes in 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Sun Belt; Tech is 2-2 and 0-0, playing its first conference game. The model makes it close to even, giving Tech a 53% chance at home. The stakes are the clearest of any week so far. Win and Tech's chance of reaching the Sun Belt title game sits at 37%, lose and it drops to 4%. Those are two separate branches of the same Saturday, not a number that moves during the game, but the gap between them is why this is the first result all season that genuinely moves Tech's October.

The rest of the board

Only two outside games matter, and both are small nudges compared with what happens in Ruston.

South Alabama at Arkansas State: root for Arkansas State

The model gives Arkansas State a 57% chance to win. This result carries a 2.3 percentage-point impact on Louisiana Tech's conference-title-game probability.

Thursday, 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Southern Miss at Troy: root for Southern Miss

This result carries a 2.2 percentage-point impact on Louisiana Tech's conference-title-game probability.

Tuesday, 7 p.m. CT on ESPN2. Southern Miss wins at Troy only about 20% of the time. An upset would also chip away at Troy, a West team Tech still has to visit later this fall.
