Ten months ago Amari Odom found Navelle Dean for an 11-yard touchdown with less than a minute left at Jacksonville State, and Kennesaw State won the Conference USA championship 19-15. Odom plays at Syracuse now. The quarterback who replaced him, Rickie Collins, came to Kennesaw from Syracuse, and on Wednesday night he gets the same Jacksonville State defense in Fifth Third Stadium, with the Gamecocks favored by 3.5 points.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, the first of Kennesaw State's midweek conference games.

What changed since December

Almost everything except the playbooks. Jerry Mack lifted the Owls from 2-10 in their FBS debut to 10-4, a league title and the first bowl game in program history, and he kept both architects. Mitch Militello still calls the offense, Marc Mattioli still runs the defense. The schemes did not change; the players running them did. Militello lost nine starters and every 2025 yardage leader, and that is the gap the first four games have been measuring.

Collins opened the season the way the staff hoped, going 18-of-23 for 171 yards with a touchdown and adding two more on the ground against West Georgia. Since then the touchdown throws have dried up. At Tennessee the Owls put together three drives of at least 59 yards and came away with three Daniel Kinney field goals, never reaching the end zone. At Arkansas State, Collins went 17-of-24 for 129 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions behind a line that did not allow a sack. Efficient, careful, and not enough. Mack's own read after the Georgia State loss was that Collins had gotten better at working through concepts but that the staff needed to cut his mental load so he could process faster. A tacit admission that the passing game is still being trimmed to fit, not expanded.

The thing to watch first on Wednesday is whether Militello calls shots at the goal line and whether Collins takes them. Kennesaw State has been moving the ball. It has been kicking instead of scoring.

The defense picked a good time to wake up

Baron Hopson was Conference USA's co-defensive player of the year in 2025, set the school record with 138 tackles, and entered this season as the league's preseason pick at the position. For two weeks he collected tackles without changing anything, 11 against Georgia State with no play behind the line, while the run defense gave up 230 rushing yards to the Panthers and 268 to Tennessee. Against Arkansas State he had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.

The Owls still lost. Kinney, who had missed one field goal in his career, pushed a 32-yarder with 2:59 left in a 17-14 defeat. That is the margin the Owls have been living on, a kick from bowl-caliber form, three straight losses to 1-3, seventh in the league table before anyone has played a conference game. Jacksonville State is 3-2 and already 1-0.

How much this one actually moves

The model gives the Owls a 40% chance at home, and the league race turns on it. Win Wednesday and Kennesaw State's path back to the Conference USA championship game sits around 17%; lose it and that same path falls to roughly 2%. Those are two branches off one game, not a number sliding over the season. Right now the overall figure is about 8%.

And a reminder before the nostalgia gets thick. Kennesaw State leads this series 4-3 since 2017, and Jacksonville State beat these Owls 35-26 in Jacksonville three weeks before the title game, Caden Creel and Cam Cook running for 252 yards and three scores. Last December was the reply, not the rule. Wednesday is the rubber match nobody scheduled, and the Owls need a touchdown through the air to win it.
