Aiden Flora's five touchdowns bought Iowa State a trip to Provo it has to earn

Flora scored or threw for five of Iowa State's six touchdowns against West Virginia. Now he and a leaky four-man front go to No. 8 BYU on Friday night.

Aiden Flora ran 22 times for a career-high 212 yards and three touchdowns against West Virginia, then threw two more scores on halfback-option plays, a 46-yard strike to Cody Jackson and a 2-yard flip to Vince Benetti, accounting for five of Iowa State's six touchdowns in a 45-42 win in Ames. The win lifted the Cyclones to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play, their first conference win under Jimmy Rogers, who arrived as the program's 34th head coach on a six-year deal and inherited a team Big 12 writers picked last in the league.

Now comes Friday night in Provo. Iowa State plays at No. 8 BYU at 9:15 p.m. CT on ESPN. The simulations give the Cyclones a 35% chance.

An offense that stayed on the field, a front that got run over

The win broke into one half worth keeping and one worth fixing.

The encouraging one is that Iowa State controlled the shape of a shootout. Iowa State held the ball 38:14 to West Virginia's 21:46, converted 5 of 11 third downs to the Mountaineers' 5 of 13, and took only seven penalties for 60 yards against West Virginia's 10 for 86. That is not a team surviving on luck; that is an offense staying on the field for two-thirds of the night.

The less encouraging one is that the defense gave up 291 rushing yards on 40 carries, 7.3 per attempt, and 518 total yards. That is the same problem Rogers named out loud after the Utah loss, when he said his defense "didn't tackle well enough", that missed tackles in space "showed up everywhere," and that "we didn't get off the field." Iowa State's four-man front has had exactly one good run-defense night against real opposition, back at Iowa, where Isaac Terrell, Caden Crawford, Max Baloun and Bryson Lamb held the Hawkeyes to 93 rushing yards and a longest run of nine, even while producing no tackles for loss, sacks or hurries. Against West Virginia, the front produced two sacks and six tackles for loss and still got run over.

And Jaylen Raynor, who completed 19 of 27 for 264 yards, was intercepted again, his second pick in two Big 12 games. Respectable numbers, recurring giveaway. The offense's signature output came from the running back, not the quarterback, for the second straight week.

The Flora question BYU is built to answer

Here is why this trip matters more to Flora's season than the West Virginia box score does. His two monster games came against Bowling Green and West Virginia. His one game against a ranked opponent went the other way. At Utah he was held to 14 yards on four first-half carries before finishing with 54 rushing yards, with Flora saying afterward the offense needed to "trust" itself.

So the thing to watch on Friday is not whether Flora gets the ball, he will, but what happens on his first six or eight carries. If he's getting three and four yards before contact against a top-10 front, Iowa State can play the game it wants to play, with long drives, clock, Raynor throwing on his terms rather than from behind. If BYU bottles him early the way Utah did, the offense has shown no second answer, and Raynor's interception rate becomes the story.

The other half is the matchup nobody in Ames wants to think about. BYU runs the ball better than almost anyone, the Cougars entered the week ranked No. 2 nationally at 6.7 yards per carry, with LJ Martin as the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. The secondary gets no help from the injury news either. Drew Surges left the West Virginia game with an apparent arm injury in the third quarter and was later on the sideline with his right arm in a sling, which arrived in the same week Jaheim Singletary was finally cleared as available. Depth keeps getting reshuffled rather than settled.

What beating BYU does to the Cyclones' October

Something real, if modest. Beat BYU and Iowa State's playoff number lands around 7%, with a Big 12 title-game chance near 9%; lose and those fall to roughly 1.6% and 0.7%. Those are two different versions of the rest of October, not a number climbing week to week. Neither outcome makes the Cyclones a contender; the projected seed barely budges, 9.2 against 9.9. The payoff of winning in Provo is not a trophy path. It is a 4-2 team with a top-10 road win, which for a roster picked last in the league is the kind of result that changes how the back half of the schedule feels.

There is precedent worth remembering. The last time these teams played, in Ames in October 2025, BYU trailed by 14 before rallying to win 41-27, with Bear Bachmeier throwing for 307 yards and Faletau Satuala finishing a game-high 10 tackles with an interception return for a touchdown. Iowa State can get a lead on this opponent. Holding one is the part that hasn't happened.

The whole week is one game, one running back, and 60 minutes of finding out whether the Cyclones can tackle. Full numbers are in the interactive guide, and the simulation details are in the methodology.
