Georgia State is idle, and one Sun Belt game actually moves its odds

Cameran Brown's six touchdown passes and a seven-sack defense buried Old Dominion 42-10. Now an open date, and a reason to pull for Georgia Southern.

Cameran Brown threw a 28-yard touchdown to Rodshaun Dorsey, an 80-yarder to Derrick Avery Jr., and four more after that, finishing 14-of-20 for 284 yards and six touchdown passes, a Georgia State and Sun Belt single-game record, with no interceptions as the Panthers scored 42 unanswered points after trailing 3-0 to beat Old Dominion 42-10 at home. Xavier Esqillion had three sacks and two forced fumbles in a seven-sack, 11-tackle-for-loss afternoon that held Old Dominion to 146 total yards and 29% on third down.

That matters because of where this program was.

The honest asterisk is that Old Dominion fell to 1-4 and 0-2 in the Sun Belt, its third straight loss. Brown's clean sheet against the Monarchs is the counterweight to that, not an erasure of it. The receiver math is the encouraging part. Five different players caught touchdowns, which is how you replace Ted Hurst, who had 71 catches for 1,004 yards last year and went in the third round as the highest NFL draft pick in program history. Nobody is being asked to be Hurst.

Georgia State doesn't play this week. The open date lands right before a trip to James Madison, and there is one game on the slate that moves Georgia State's numbers.

James Madison at Georgia Southern: root for Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern is a 10% home underdog here, so don't build the weekend around it. But James Madison is the East's problem, and the Panthers' own conference title-game odds sit near 4.8% if the Eagles pull the upset versus about 1.7% if the Dukes win. A 3.1-point swing from one result, which is as much as any single outside game will do for Georgia State this season. A loss costs James Madison directly in the standings race Georgia State is trying to climb. Rivalry feelings about Statesboro can wait until November.
