Fresno State is 4-1, has won four straight since the opening loss at then-No. 14 USC, and owns the program's first Pac-12 victory.
No. 23 Boise State comes to Valley Children's Stadium for the Milk Can at 7:30 p.m. Pacific on The CW Network, Fresno State's homecoming. Fresno State beat Washington State 26-6 in Week 5.
After the Rice win Entz said, "Our kids trust him... And when he does make mistakes, he doesn't make them again." Saturday asks for something more. Sustained drives against a defense that will not hand over the field. He went 24 of 33 for 245 yards at Washington State without leading rusher Rayshon Luke, who left the concussion protocol late in the first quarter and still finished as the team's top rusher with 46 yards on six carries. If Luke is limited again, Mandal has to do more than avoid mistakes.
The reason Fresno State is a 56.6 percent home favorite anyway is the defense. Against Washington State it allowed 30 rushing yards and 182 total yards, recorded five sacks with 1.5 from Dylan Hampsten, and got a Justin Johnson interception of Caden Pinnick plus two pass breakups from Kiontre Harris. A rebuilt unit that lost three secondary starters and Ryan Wilson for the season. Fresno State comes in allowing 16 points per game, among the conference's best, against a Boise State offense averaging 227 rushing and 212 passing yards. That same defense gave up 344 rushing yards to Rice. Which version shows up Saturday decides the game more than Mandal does.
The stakes are real and immediate. A win lifts Fresno State's Pac-12 title-game odds to about 86 percent and its playoff odds to roughly 11 percent; a loss drops those to about 54 percent and 3 percent. Entz put it plainly. "This is what we wanted. Part of the reason why we went to the Pac-12 is we're going to play meaningful games in mid-October." And the trophy is already Fresno's. The Bulldogs have won three straight in the series, including 30-7 at Boise State last season. Boise opened as a 9.5-point favorite before the line moved to -7.5, which is the market agreeing with the home crowd on homecoming.
Two other games worth a glance
San Diego State at Oregon State: root for Oregon State
The model gives Oregon State a 61% chance to win.
The one outside result with a direct standings effect. San Diego State is a Pac-12 team Fresno State visits next week; a Beavers win knocks a conference rival down a game in the race. Oregon State wins about 61 percent of the time, worth roughly 1.9 percentage points on Fresno State's title-game odds. The difference between about 73 percent with the Beavers win and 71 percent without. Kickoff is 3 p.m. Pacific on USA Network.
James Madison at Georgia Southern: root for Georgia Southern
The model gives Georgia Southern a 10% chance to win.
Pure national math applies here. James Madison is a Group of Six playoff competitor, and a loss thins the field Fresno State would have to climb over for an at-large bid. Georgia Southern wins only about 10 percent of the time, so treat this as a bonus rather than a plan. About 9.5 percent playoff odds for Fresno State if the Eagles pull it off against 7.5 percent if they don't, a 2.0-point swing. ESPNU, 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
