FIU opens Conference USA play with no injury report listing for JJ Kohl

A knee sprain ended JJ Kohl's LIU start, FIU's injury report does not list him at all, and New Mexico State arrives off six sacks and a pick-six in its conference opener.

Kohl sprained a knee in the LIU game after going 6-of-11 for 135 yards, and Willie Simmons said he could have returned but was held out as a precaution. Delaware transfer Zach Marker played the whole second half in his place, went 6-of-10 for 92 yards with no turnovers, and said he wasn't told he was going in until just before the third quarter. That half was Marker's first game action since August 2025, and it is the entire body of evidence FIU has about life without its starting quarterback.

FIU hosts New Mexico State on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and the Panthers' injury report, last updated Sept. 27, lists tight ends K. Schaeffer and A. Passley and kicker N. Sidan as questionable, while Kohl doesn't appear on it at all. No report, no clearance, no ruling. The first real information arrives when somebody takes the opening snap.

Why the quarterback question is the whole week

Kohl was brought in from Appalachian State to replace nearly all of FIU's passing production after throwing for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns on 61.6 percent passing in 2025, and four starts in, his FIU log still swings wildly. There were turnovers at South Florida, four touchdowns against Buffalo, three first-quarter interceptions in the Shula Bowl, then the shortened LIU start. He has also been banged up before. He took chest X-rays at halftime at Florida Atlantic, got a negative result and played the second half hurt. This is a quarterback who plays through things.

Everything else about this offense is easier to project. Simmons, offensive coordinator Nick Coleman and defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt all returned for Year 2, so the Panthers are running the same systems that produced the 2025 breakthrough. The quarterback is the one load the continuity doesn't cover.

The opponent makes that uncomfortable. New Mexico State's defense got six sacks against Western Kentucky, and De'Marcus Peters returned an interception for a touchdown to push the lead to 13-3, the Aggies' third defensive touchdown of the season. A compromised quarterback, or a backup, against a pass rush in that form is the version of this game FIU does not want.

Kyle McNeal's absence tightens it further. FIU's starting receiver was hurt on the first play of the second half against Buffalo and was absent for FIU's game against LIU. Maguire Anderson and Tyson Carter have absorbed those targets, but Kohl, or Marker, would rather have FIU's most reliable target back.

The rest of it

FIU closed its nonconference schedule 2-2 with the LIU win, which was also Simmons' 75th career victory as a head coach and FIU's fourth straight at home. New Mexico State arrives 1-0 in Conference USA, tied atop the standings with Liberty and Jacksonville State. FIU is 0-0 in league play, so the standings gap is real but one week old.

The model gives FIU a 75 percent chance to win, which is generous compared to a local preview that made the Panthers 3.5-point favorites and picked a 24-21 FIU win. The stakes are plain enough. Win and FIU's chance of reaching the Conference USA title game sits near 25 percent; lose and it's about 6 percent. That's the single largest swing on the board this week for the Panthers, and it comes on a weeknight because this is one of Conference USA's designated midweek games, the first of three straight weeknight conference games, with a trip to Jacksonville State on Oct. 13 and Middle Tennessee visiting Oct. 20. The condensed stretch is another reason a healthy Kohl matters more than usual; there is no spare week in it.

Jacksonville State at Kennesaw State: root for Kennesaw State

The model gives Kennesaw State a 40% chance to win. This result carries a 5.6 percentage-point impact on Florida International's conference-title-game probability.

Kennesaw State hosts Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. ET on CBSSN, and the Owls are the side to pull for. A 40 percent proposition, so don't build the evening around it. Jacksonville State is also FIU's Week 7 opponent, so a loss costs the Gamecocks a league game while FIU plays its own. Kennesaw State winning puts FIU's title-game odds at 23.6 percent; Jacksonville State winning puts them at 18 percent. Worth checking the score, not worth the remote.
