Emory Williams has the job, and now the ball security has to follow

ECU opens American Conference play against Rice on Homecoming with a settled quarterback whose first start produced 341 yards and three giveaways.

Emory Williams threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start against North Carolina Central, and he also turned the ball over three times, including two fumbles. Blake Harrell had named Williams the outright starter over incumbent Mitch Griffis that week, a performance decision, not an injury replacement. Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN+, he makes his first conference start, at home against Rice, on Homecoming.

So the quarterback question has split in two. Who plays is answered. Whether ECU can run eight clean possessions with him is not.

The Rice game itself

The model gives East Carolina an 87.7% chance to win, which is about what a 2-2 team should expect against a struggling visitor at home. ECU has never lost to Rice in Greenville. That is the easy part.

The uneasy part is the history. The last time these two met, in the 2023 AAC opener at Rice Stadium, ECU out-gained Rice for most of the night and lost 24-17 anyway, settling for three field goals and turning the ball over five times. That is the exact failure mode Williams carried out of the NC Central game, in the exact slot on the calendar.

Rice is not arriving harmless, either. Its defense forced two turnovers against UTSA last week, an interception and a forced fumble in a 16-14 loss in which the Owls held a favored opponent to 16 points. ECU's 489 total yards at 8.2 per play came against an FCS defense. Jordan Davis' offense has not yet been asked to sustain that against a unit playing takeaway-hunting football.

What should feel genuinely good is that ECU's defense has its own ball-hawking streak going. Ayden Duncanson intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown against NC Central. If Williams has another loose afternoon, that unit has shown it can win the turnover ledger by itself.

Two names to check on the inactive list before kickoff. Receiver Jeremiah Melvin and running back Ashton Gray have both missed time, Melvin kept from starting by an undisclosed issue, with no diagnosis or timeline given, and Gray out since his Week 3 injury at Old Dominion, and both are considered close to returning and targeting the Rice game after the bye. Getting them back gives Williams more proven targets and a second real back, which is the cheapest available way to lower the variance on his throws.

Harrell called the NC Central win a matter of "catching a little bit of momentum and identity." Nothing in that game tested the American. This one does, modestly. Win it and ECU's title-game odds sit near 9.5%; lose it and they fall to about 2.9%. Neither number is a season, but the gap is the whole reason to care about a 4 p.m. Homecoming game.

UAB at Memphis: root for UAB

UAB has about a 15% chance to win in Memphis, kicking at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Memphis is the standings obstacle ECU can't dodge; the Pirates play there in Week 8 as the underdog, and beating the Tigers in their own building may be the only way the Pirates get past them. A Blazers win would do some of that climbing for them. A UAB upset puts ECU's conference championship game odds near 10.8%; a Memphis win leaves them around 8.3%. That's a 2.5-point swing, free of charge.
