Colorado State's defensive rebuild collapsed in one Homecoming afternoon

Tied 14-14 early in the second quarter, the Rams were outscored 42-12 by Oregon State and have now allowed 50-plus points in consecutive games for the first time since 1984.

The Rams had been tied 14-14 early in the second quarter; Oregon State outscored them 42-12 from there.

That is the whole defensive rebuild, collapsed into one afternoon. The Rams had just allowed 204.9 rushing yards per game in a 2-10 season, their fewest wins since 1988. Colorado State lost to Oregon State 56-26 in Week 5.

The numbers underneath it are not ambiguous. Colorado State came into Saturday 129th nationally in scoring defense at 34.3 points allowed per game, and with UTSA and Oregon State back to back it has now given up 50-plus points in consecutive games for the first time since 1984. The failures were basic enough that Mora pulled defensive coordinator Tyson Summers off play-calling in the first quarter and said afterward that Summers is no longer with the program, with co-coordinator Kenny McClendon now running the defense. Missed tackles were turning short throws into long touchdowns.

The Homecoming crowd was reported at roughly 41,000, the largest in school history. The four-game home opening that was supposed to establish Mora's team before a road-heavy second half ended here. Whatever credibility the Wyoming and Southern Utah wins built, the Pac-12 opener spent it in front of everyone.

So what is actually left to hold onto during the bye? Mora's own answer was character. Asked about words like fight and connection, he said they "ring empty in a time like this" but that experience had taught him those are the things "you really hang your hat on" right now. He is not wrong that it is what he has. It is also not a scheme, and it is not a defense that tackles.

Two things worth tracking across the open week, both concrete. Farrar was fine, 17-of-27 for 178 yards and a touchdown, plus a rushing score, with Durell Robinson running for 117, but fine from the backup is not the question. Hauss Hejny, the intended starter, missed his second straight game with the hamstring he hurt against BYU, so whether this run-first offense works with him has gone unanswered. Mel Brown, who scored on a 17-yard run before leaving in the second quarter and being taken to a hospital, is the other name to watch; no diagnosis has been shared.

Nothing on this weekend's national slate changes any of that. There is no result elsewhere that improves Colorado State's standing, and the Rams' remaining path is plain enough in the projections. There is about a 13% chance at Texas State in Week 7, 36% at home against San Diego State in Week 8, roughly one conference win expected across the seven-game round robin. The bye is not a reset.
