Drew Logan sacked Noah Fifita on the game's opening play. Jasper Beeler piled up 12 tackles, including a fourth-down tackle for loss that stopped an Arizona drive, and MJ Cannon intercepted Fifita for his second pick of the season.

Cincinnati is off this week. The bye has been sitting on Oct. 10 since the schedule came out, and nothing on the national slate moves the Bearcats' season in a way worth rearranging a Saturday for. The useful work is internal, and most of it belongs to the defense. Cincinnati lost to Arizona 34-7 in Week 5.

The pattern keeps moving, not disappearing

Nate Woody came to Cincinnati after six seasons at Army, whose defense led the American Conference in total defense in each of his last two years there, and he spent the spring installing a more aggressive 3-4. Against Arizona that group kept the game to 10-0 at halftime, and Jacob Finley even forced a fumble, though Arizona retained it after a penalty.

The problem is what happened once Arizona kept leaning on the same plan. Scott Satterfield, talking about the 238 rushing yards Arizona piled up, said: "They were able to run the football. They hit some big runs on us." That is a coach naming the exact failure a fan can watch for. It is not a scheme nobody recognized, just gaps that got wider as the game went on.

What makes this the week's real question is that the breakdown moved. At Arizona the halves flipped the other way. Arizona scored 24 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarters before Cincinnati's garbage-time touchdown. That is what two weeks of practice can plausibly address, namely depth in the front, fitting the run, and holding the plan when an offense has seen it for 30 minutes.

The offense picked the same night to disappear

The defense did not lose this one alone. The line in front of quarterback JC French sent Joe Cotton and Evan Tengesdahl to the preseason All-Big 12 team and returned Cotton, Tengesdahl and Taran Tyo as starters. The run game managed 74 yards, roughly 196 below its season average, with Cole Tabb managing 19 yards on six carries. Arizona sacked French three times, and he called the line's night "uncharacteristic." He said, "I feel we can come in and run on anybody; it just wasn't our night."

One thing is settled, at least. Cincinnati was penalized six times for 46 yards at Arizona, nowhere near the 11-for-105 night that had French warning teammates the penalties could cost them games in conference play. Whatever is wrong right now, it is not discipline.

What the week off is actually for

The schedule was always built this way, with four games in the Cincinnati area to open, the bye, and then three of the last four on the road. Cincinnati has climbed from 3-9 to 5-7 to 7-6 in its three Big 12 seasons, but 2025 reached 7-1 and 5-0 in the league before losing its final five games, including a 35-13 Liberty Bowl defeat to Navy. The Arizona margin is one data point, not a verdict. The road stretch that actually tests durability has not started.

It starts at West Virginia on Oct. 17, the one genuinely winnable game left on the board at 54% in our model. After that the hill gets steep, with Texas Tech at home at 15%, Utah at 12%, Houston at 29%, BYU at 15%, with hosting Colorado at 78% the other clear opportunity. In other words, the half Woody's defense played in Tucson is roughly the half Cincinnati needs twice at Morgantown. Nothing about the bye changes those numbers; a defense that finishes the way it starts would.
