Cal's quarterback wobbled off in Vegas and the run game never showed up

Sagapolutele's head injury and a 69-yard rushing night at UNLV set up a home date with the Virginia Tech team that beat him in double overtime last October.

Late in the second quarter at UNLV, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele hit the turf hard on a tackle, got up, and walked off wobbling. He had already thrown an interception, and he did not come back. Doctors cleared him; Tosh Lupoi held him out anyway. "I just wasn't comfortable the way he came off the field, literally wobbling," Lupoi said. "I was not going to jeopardize him." Cal lost 39-31, trailing 24-7 at the half after three straight Jackson Arnold touchdowns, climbing back to a 25-24 lead in the fourth quarter, then watching UNLV score twice more.

Lupoi came out of it sounding like a coach who found something to keep. The rally from 24-7 down, he said, "told me I have a team still that believes in me as I believe in them." Fine. But the box score said the familiar thing. Cal out-gained UNLV 464-345 and did it almost entirely through the air, 395 passing yards against 69 rushing yards. Leading rusher Adam Mohammed sat out with his knee injury, and Ashten Emory scored a rushing touchdown while Tyree Sams added 3 carries for 28 yards for the rest of the ground game.

Five games in, that imbalance is the season's story, not a one-week accident. A quarterback with a head injury on top of it is why this week's availability report matters more than the point spread.

Virginia Tech, 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday on ACC Network

Virginia Tech comes to Memorial Stadium a 9.5-point favorite after opening at 10.5 and moving on Sunday, with the number liable to move again once Cal files its Wednesday ACC injury report. The simulation gives the Bears a 39% chance at home, which is roughly what a banged-up 2-3 team hosting a better one should be.

The three names on that report are the whole week. Sagapolutele looks likely to play; Mohammed and safety Kingston Lopa are each listed as uncertain. Lopa's absence has already been felt once. He entered the UNLV game as the nation's leader with five interceptions and left on Cal's first defensive snap with an upper-body injury, never returning. Getting him back is the single cleanest upgrade available to this defense.

So the thing worth watching early isn't whether Sagapolutele is dressed. It's whether he stands in on a muddy third down and takes a hit, and whether Cal can hand off on second-and-6 and gain four yards. If both of those are true, the Bears can play with the Hokies. If neither is, this becomes another 400-yard passing night that ends 39-31.

The team that ended his freshman season

There's an edge to this one that Cal fans will feel before kickoff. Last October in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech trailed 20-10 at halftime, scored three straight times to take a 27-20 lead, and won it in double OT when Kyron Drones threw a 7-yard touchdown to Takye Heath and ran in the two-point conversion. California had tied it 27-27 to send the game to overtime, and both kickers missed go-ahead field goals inside the final 62 seconds of regulation. Sagapolutele, then a true freshman, threw a 25-yard touchdown to take the lead in the first overtime before Virginia Tech tied it to force a second, and then threw four consecutive incompletions to end the game. Marcellous Hawkins ran for 167 yards that night and Kemari Copeland recorded the first three-sack game of his career.

The difference is that a year ago Cal nearly won that game at full strength. This time the Bears may be doing it without their best back and their best defensive back, with a quarterback whose last snap ended with him walking off unsteady. Which is exactly why a close one Saturday would mean more than the one that got away did.
