Wyoming's best game of the season now has to travel to Fargo

Now Wyoming visits unbeaten North Dakota State on Homecoming as a 13% underdog.

Tyler Hughes had already done his part, going 17-of-23 for 204 yards with no turnovers, completions to nine different receivers in what Pokes News described as his cleanest game of the season. Wyoming out-gained Hawai'i 387-328 overall and 183-102 on the ground, and it was 205-90 in total yards by halftime. That is not a lucky win. That is a team winning the line of scrimmage for four quarters, which Wyoming had not done all season.

The thing worth remembering is where it happened. Wyoming won at home, against a beatable opponent, after Sawvel spent a week rewiring his locker room. Following the loss at Central Michigan, which he called an "embarrassment," Sawvel banned cell phones pregame and the team held players-only meetings, changes Jones Thomas credited for making the group feel more connected. Whether a cell-phone rule wins football games is beside the point; what it produced was a team that stopped beating itself for one Saturday. Sawvel himself refused to oversell it, saying "It's one game. Tomorrow, we go back to work, and we've got to get this right and go do it again". Take him at his word.

Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Mountain, The CW Network

Wyoming goes to North Dakota State, and it is the first real road test of the reset. October 3 is NDSU's first Mountain West home game as a conference member. It is also, of course, NDSU's Homecoming. The realigned Mountain West added UTEP as a full member and NDSU and Northern Illinois as football affiliates, which is how a trip to Fargo ended up on a Cowboys conference schedule at all. The simulation gives Wyoming a 13% chance.

So treat the afternoon accordingly. A loss here is the expected result and should not undo anything the Hawai'i game established. What you actually want to see, whatever the scoreboard says, is the same Wyoming. That means Hughes protecting the ball in a loud building, Markell Holman and Samuel Harris still getting four-yard gains on first down in the fourth quarter, and a defense that does not surrender the run the way it did in Michigan. If that version of the team shows up in Fargo, the San José State trip the following week and the home date with Northern Illinois look very different than they did two weeks ago.

There is real money on the table anyway. An upset would push Wyoming's chance of reaching the Mountain West title game to about 20%, while a loss leaves it near 4%. Those are two alternative versions of the season, not a number that moves during the fourth quarter. Neither branch makes Wyoming a favorite for anything; the projection is still 3.8 conference wins. But a 13% underdog carrying that much upside is exactly the kind of game you watch all the way through.

The subplot on the other sideline

Tim Polasek ran Wyoming's offense from 2021 through 2023 under Craig Bohl, and he left for the NDSU job 11 days after Sawvel was promoted to head coach, later saying NDSU had always been his top head-coaching target and that he wished Wyoming's offense had improved faster on his watch. Both head coaches worked under Bohl in Laramie, Polasek on offense and Sawvel on defense, and Wyoming's defensive coordinator, Aaron Bohl, is Craig's son. Craig Bohl and athletic director Tom Burman have both said publicly they think this series could become a rivalry. It is one game old in the league and already personal.

One name still missing

Landon Sims tore an ACL on Nov. 1, 2025, was limited through spring practice and was expected back in the quarterback competition in August. He did not appear among Wyoming's starters or participants in the Week 1 game book, Hughes was the only Cowboy to throw a pass against Northern Colorado, and he has not turned up in a game report since. Four games in, nobody outside the program knows what Wyoming has behind Hughes.
