Jared Curtis goes back to Athens with drives left unfinished

Vanderbilt's freshman quarterback was clean but touchdown-free at Auburn. Now he faces the Georgia program he committed to twice, with an 11% shot.

Jared Curtis completed 22 of 33 passes for 199 yards in his first true SEC road start at Auburn, threw no touchdowns, and put the ball in danger exactly once. A Hail Mary as the first half expired. Sedrick Alexander's 3-yard run was Vanderbilt's only offensive touchdown; Brock Taylor kicked three field goals; the Commodores went 4-of-17 on third down and had 8 penalties for 43 yards.

The freshman is not losing games. He is not finishing them either. Vanderbilt lost to Auburn 21-15 in Week 4.

What Auburn actually proved

Vanderbilt's defense held Auburn's offense to 279 total yards, and only 14 of Auburn's 21 points came from that offense. Miles Capers picked off Byrum Brown at the Auburn 24 in the first quarter to set up a field goal, and Brown finished with 140 passing yards. Martel Hight was listed as the starting cornerback on the pregame depth chart, and nobody reported him being pulled. For a team that lost Diego Pavia's offense, that defense is the reason games stay close.

The special-teams unit is the other story, and Clark Lea did not soften it. "Having a blocked punt for a touchdown for the second time this season, that's not good enough." Earlier this year Austin Howard blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone against Delaware, the second straight game Vanderbilt scored off a blocked kick. Those swings cut both ways, and they cut harder in Athens. Against the No. 2 team in the country, a free seven points is the difference between a competitive afternoon and a rout by halftime.

The personal part

Curtis committed to Georgia in March 2024, committed again in May 2025, and flipped to Vanderbilt on Dec. 2, 2025, the night before the early signing period opened, citing Nashville and Lea's new extension. He is the first five-star signee in program history and was ESPN's No. 1 pocket passer in the 2026 class. So he walks into Sanford Stadium Saturday as the most consequential recruiting win Vanderbilt has ever had, on the visiting sideline, playing the staff that spent nearly two years trying to keep him.

Curtis stood in the pocket at Auburn and did not give the ball away. He also did not get Vanderbilt into the end zone through the air.

What to watch for

Tim Beck's 2025 offense averaged 39.4 points and led the nation in yards per play. Nothing about this year is going to look like that, and it doesn't need to. The specific thing worth tracking Saturday is third down and the red zone, whether Curtis can turn the same clean, methodical possessions into six instead of three against a defense several tiers better than Auburn's. If Vanderbilt is converting on third down against Georgia, the finishing problem was about reps, not ceiling. If it's another 4-of-17, the Ole Miss game next week becomes the season.

Kickoff is 12:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network, and the model gives Vanderbilt an 11% shot. Beating Georgia would roughly double Vanderbilt's playoff odds, from about 6% in the losing branch to 14% in the winning one. Real movement, but both numbers describe a long shot, and neither is what this trip is for. Nothing else on the national board Saturday moves Vanderbilt's math, which makes this a rare week where the only screen that matters is the one with your own team on it.

The longer bet

This is the middle leg of the hardest three weeks Vanderbilt will play, at Auburn, at Georgia, home to Ole Miss, with Alabama visiting Nov. 14 and Tennessee closing the year in Nashville. The Auburn result was the first defeat of the season and dropped the Commodores to 3-1, 0-1 in the SEC, which is exactly how a program that went 2-10 in 2023, 7-6 with a Birmingham Bowl win in 2024 and then 10-3 in 2025 finds out whether the climb held. Those 10 wins and six SEC wins were both program records, and the outside world never believed in a repeat. Vanderbilt opened outside the Coaches Poll Top 25 and BetMGM set the win total at 5.5.

A 5.5-win total is the bar Vanderbilt was handed in August. Vanderbilt is not supposed to win in Athens, and won't be judged on it. What a fan can reasonably want is Curtis standing in against real pressure, the defense doing again what it did to Auburn, and the punt team getting off the field cleanly. A team that looks like the 2025 version even in a loss it was never favored to avoid. Full details are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains the numbers.
