Ten months ago in Logan, Javen Jacobs broke off a 56-yard touchdown run and Utah State led Boise State 24-13 in the third quarter, only for Max Cutforth to hit Quinton Brown for 66 yards and Dylan Riley to punch in the go-ahead score with 2:26 left in a 25-24 Boise State win. That was the 10th straight Utah State loss to the Broncos. On Saturday night in Logan, a different Aggie team beat Troy 21-10. Grady Brosterhous threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 89 more, a 57-yard strike to Javon Robinson and a 5-yard score to Eli Wood, and Jacobs added 84 yards and the offense's first rushing touchdown of the season.
Bronco Mendenhall then confirmed Brosterhous as the starting quarterback going forward, with McCae Hillstead "available and battling" for reps. That matters more than the win itself. The quarterback question Utah State carried into September is settled by one very good night rather than by a competition anybody got to watch. Robert Anae's offense is built around quick decisions, accuracy and getting the ball to playmakers in space, and against Troy it finally looked like that. He went 18-of-28, the line allowed one sack after nine over the first three games, and a running back had 84 yards. Brosterhous now takes that into the game at Boise State, Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MT on CBSSN.
What Troy actually proved
Not much about Boise State. Utah State is 1-3 and next travels to the one program it has been unable to beat. Boise State leads the all-time series 25-5, and the current run stretches back to 2016. The Aggies' last win in it came in 2015.
The model gives Utah State an 11% chance in Boise. That is a real number, not a rounding error, and last November is the reason it isn't smaller. This team's predecessor had a two-score second-half lead on these Broncos and lost by one. If Brosterhous's mobility keeps the line's improved protection honest and the third-quarter version of this offense shows up, the game stays live longer than the spread suggests.
Watch the secondary
The defense's Troy performance was the season's best by turnover count. Brevin Hamblin had 12 tackles and an interception, D'Angelo Mayes added eight tackles and a pick, Markie Grant broke up four passes, and David Kabongo took one late. Three interceptions is how a 1-3 team steals a game it is not supposed to win, and it is the one Utah State trait that scales against a better opponent. If the Aggies get a short field or two in Boise, that 11% starts feeling different in real time.
They will do it without Harrison Taggart, who was taken by ambulance to the hospital during the Utah game. He appeared in a wheelchair for the Troy coin flip wearing swim goggles and a snorkel, which is the most Taggart thing imaginable and told the defense plenty, but he did not play. Whatever Utah State's linebackers do Saturday, they do it in his absence.
The stakes underneath
A win in Boise moves Utah State's Pac-12 championship odds to roughly 20%; a loss leaves them near 3.7%. Those are two branches of the same Saturday, not a sequence. Boise is the toughest game on the Aggies' Pac-12 schedule, and the gap between those two numbers is mostly the gap between winning there and needing everything else to break right.
Brosterhous has earned a fan's curiosity, and Boise State's front will come harder than Troy's did. If he still gets the ball out on time against it, and the secondary hands him a short field, the streak finally has something pushing back on it. CBSSN carries it at 5:30. Full numbers are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how the projections are built.
