UCLA beat Maryland 54-3, and Colin Hitschler's rebuilt defense spent the afternoon closer to a finished product than it had all season. Maryland got 181 total yards on 69 plays and converted 1 of 15 third downs. Sahir West and Scott Taylor got the two sacks. For a unit being reassembled around Hitschler's system, the one that allowed 266.6 yards and 18.4 points per game at James Madison last year, fifth and 14th nationally, this was the first game that looked like the target rather than a step toward it.
The honest caveat is that UCLA's four games have bounced. One dominant Saturday against a struggling passing offense is not a settled trend.
What the rest of the roster confirmed
Nico Iamaleava went 15 of 24 for 209 yards with a touchdown, hitting eight different receivers. Four different carriers scored on the ground for 266 rushing yards.
The 51-point margin was the largest UCLA has ever posted in Big Ten play, and Chesney is the program's first coach to start 4-0 since 1949. A coach who took James Madison to 21-6 over two years and a Playoff appearance has a career's worth of fast starts behind him, so the sensible reaction is that this is the break from two losing seasons, not proof of where the ceiling sits.
Nothing to watch, and that is fine
UCLA is idle in Week 5. Nothing on Saturday's board moves the Bruins' season in any direction worth your afternoon, so spend it however you like.
What the bye actually buys is two weeks of preparation before the schedule stops cooperating. UCLA played three of its first four against California, San Diego State and Purdue by design, with the early bye built in, and then goes to Oregon, where the simulation gives the Bruins a 19% chance. Michigan on the road and USC at home close the season. The model has UCLA at 5.7 conference wins, a 5% shot at the Big Ten title game and a 5.6% Playoff number. Reasonable for a 4-0 team whose best wins came against opponents in trouble.
Forget the scoreboard for a second. Hitschler's defense generated four takeaways, all of them interceptions of Malik Washington and two of them returned for touchdowns, and it has already picked off more passes this season than UCLA managed in all of 2025. Oregon is the first offense capable of punishing the coverage that gave up 378 passing yards to Purdue. Two weeks to fix that is a real gift.
