Syracuse's quarterback job is still open and UConn is where Fran Brown has to choose

Fran Brown benched Steve Angeli for Amari Odom at Pittsburgh and still hasn't named a starter. Noon Saturday at UConn on CBSSN is where that choice finally shows up.

Fran Brown took Steve Angeli out of the Pittsburgh game in the fourth quarter. Angeli had thrown two interceptions in that quarter, the second one setting up a Pitt field goal, a week after a three-interception game against Cal. Amari Odom replaced him and went 7 of 7 for 44 yards, and afterward Brown described the depth chart the way he had described it in August. "It's been a quarterback competition from the beginning. There was competition all week."

Two weeks later, there is still no name. Brown went through the bye without announcing a starter for Saturday, which means the quarterback question Syracuse carried out of Pittsburgh arrives at Rentschler Field completely intact. Kickoff is noon Eastern on CBSSN.

What the first snap tells you

Watch who trots out for the opening drive, because that is the whole decision in public. If Odom starts, a 19-college-start transfer who was first-team All-Conference USA in 2025 has taken the job on seven throws. Odom was brought in as insurance, not as a challenger; Malachi Nelson arrived with him for the same reason, because Syracuse spent 2025 watching what happened when the passing game had no reliable backup plan.

Neither answer is bad news by itself. A quarterback rotation would be. Syracuse's offense has spent three games losing possessions to turnovers and stalled drives, and a week-to-week platoon in a road stadium would add a new problem rather than solve the existing one. The best version of Saturday is a starter who takes every meaningful snap and is still taking them in the fourth quarter.

Why this one carries more weight than the record suggests

Syracuse is 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the ACC, having lost both conference games it has played. UConn is not a conference game, so nothing in the standings moves. What is at stake is whether Year 3 looks like Brown's 10-win 2024 or his three-win 2025, and a fanbase that has lived through both swings will read this game as evidence either way. The simulation gives Syracuse about a 19% chance on the road, which is a real number and not a rounding error, but losing as a favorite-adjacent underdog to a non-conference opponent would make Virginia and Louisville the next places to look for a win, and neither is a better bet than this one.

The defense has its own thread worth following. Vince Kehres came to Syracuse from a Toledo defense that finished second nationally in total defense and fourth in scoring defense, and his first two games here looked like it. Cal managed 182 passing yards and 67 rushing yards, 249 total. Then Pittsburgh ran for 245. One good afternoon against UConn would suggest the Pitt game was the outlier; another leaky one would suggest the first two weeks were.

There is an extra layer to that. Kehres and UConn head coach Jason Candle coached together for two decades, at Division III Mount Union and then at Toledo, where Candle hired him as defensive coordinator in 2020, and they left Toledo on the same December day in 2025. Candle to UConn, Kehres to Syracuse. The head coach across the field knows exactly how this defense is built. If Syracuse's front holds up against the run anyway, that counts for more than the raw yardage total.
