South Alabama's defense gets 0-4 ULM a week after Kentucky ran for 390

Now Todd Orlando's defense opens Sun Belt play at home against an 0-4 UL Monroe team.

CJ Baxter, Jason Patterson and Jovantae Barnes each ran for at least 100 yards on South Alabama on Saturday, part of 390 rushing yards on 42 carries, 9.3 per attempt, Kentucky's biggest rushing day since 2020 and only the second time in school history that three Wildcats backs cleared 100 in the same game. The Jaguars were still in it at the half hour mark. They went ahead 21-14 with 1:22 left in the second quarter before Patterson's 75-yard touchdown tied it, Grant Godfrey's interception set up a field goal for a 24-21 Kentucky halftime lead, and Kentucky scored 21 unanswered points after the break.

The raw defensive number is the part that should unsettle you. South Alabama allowed 45 points and 567 total yards, including 390 rushing yards with three 100-yard rushers. Todd Orlando was hired to beat a 2025 unit that gave up 380.4 yards per game. Saturday was worse than that average. South Alabama lost to Kentucky 45-21 in Week 4.

What makes it sting is how Orlando's defense opened the year. Against SE Louisiana it held the Lions to 45 rushing yards on 17 attempts and went 7-for-7 stopping third downs, with a Jordan Williams sack and interceptions by Damyrion Darby and Jaylen Moson, and Applewhite credited his new coordinator with instilling exactly the aggression he wanted. That was the promise. Kentucky took the same idea and tripled the ball-carriers.

The Homecoming game itself

South Alabama hosts UL Monroe on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+, and it is UL Monroe's Sun Belt opener as well as South Alabama's Homecoming game at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The Warhawks arrive 0-4. South Alabama leads the series 7-5 and has won the last four meetings. The model makes the Jaguars a 90.5% favorite, and it is hard to argue.

That is the awkward thing about this week. The defense needs to look like the unit from the opener again, and the schedule has handed it the one opponent against whom looking good proves the least. A shutout-adjacent afternoon will not tell you whether the run fits hold up against Arkansas State next Thursday. What you can watch for is narrower and more honest. Watch whether ULM breaks off long runs at all, and whether South Alabama gets off the field on third down and ends drives the way it did in September's first week. Volume and tackling on first contact, not the final score.

The other live thread is quarterback. Bishop Davenport has now missed two straight games with an undisclosed injury, downgraded to doubtful before kickoff at Kentucky with no diagnosis or timetable released, and Jared Hollins made his second consecutive start. Hollins threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns in Lexington but also his first two interceptions in a game this season, one of which set up Kentucky's go-ahead field goal before the half. Homecoming against an 0-4 defense is the softest place on the schedule to find out whether he can play a clean game, and with Arkansas State next Thursday, the Jaguars would rather not be guessing at the position much longer.

Sun Belt coaches picked South Alabama sixth in a seven-team West, ahead of only ULM. Winning this is not an achievement. Losing it at Homecoming would be the season's real damage. A win puts the Jaguars' title-game odds at about 12.9%; a loss drops the same number to roughly 4.5%. Those are two branches from Saturday, not a slide from one to the other.

Arkansas State at Louisiana: root for Arkansas State

Louisiana hosts Arkansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+, and the Red Wolves are the side worth pulling for. A straight standings play, since Louisiana is the West team most likely to be ahead of South Alabama when the division sorts itself out, and the Jaguars visit Lafayette in November. Arkansas State wins this about 24% of the time, which is why it belongs in the "fun if it happens" file rather than the anxious one. The payoff if it does is roughly 2.1 percentage points on South Alabama's Sun Belt title-game odds.
