San Diego State reaches its first Pac-12 game with both lead backs hurt

Sutton and Kinnard were both knocked out at Toledo, and the Aztecs host a top-10 rushing offense in their first Pac-12 game Saturday night.

Early in the third quarter at Toledo, a defender fell on Lucky Sutton's foot and Sutton was helped off the field, re-aggravating the high-ankle sprain that had already cost him the James Madison game, after 8 carries for 11 yards. Javion Kinnard was already gone by then, hurt on a stuffed third-and-1 in the first quarter with an apparent left-knee injury. San Diego State finished a 41-16 loss with Jordin Thomas and Josiah Lucas at running back, and the team rushing total bottomed out at 48 yards. The Aztecs are 1-3, and the nonconference stretch that was supposed to build a résumé closed 0-3.

Texas State walks into Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Pacific on The CW Network for the first Pac-12 conference game in San Diego State history.

The backfield is the whole week

Sutton rushed for 1,297 yards a year ago. Kinnard, filling in for him against James Madison, piled up 251 all-purpose yards, the most by an Aztec since Rashaad Penny in the 2017 Armed Forces Bowl, and that game already came with a muddle, since Sean Lewis called Sutton's absence "just getting a little veteran's rest" beforehand and "battling an injury" afterward. Now both are hurt in the same afternoon, and as of Saturday Lewis said only that the team would "get some more tests and make the plans accordingly," with no return timetable announced.

The injury report, and then the first handoff Saturday, will tell Aztecs fans whether either back is available. If Sutton dresses and carries the ball with any conviction, everything else about the night gets easier.

What the other side does

Texas State arrives 6th nationally in rushing at 281.3 yards per game and 7th in total offense, while San Diego State ranks 124th in total offense. Slowing that down is the job of a defense calling plays for the first time under Demetrius Sumler, the longtime Aztecs assistant promoted to coordinator this year, and it has not held up in three straight losses.

There is one thread worth holding onto. Lewis was blunt postgame, "Disappointed with the effort, we need to be coached better, need to put our guys in better positions to be successful", but he liked what Jayden Denegal did, praising his footwork and mechanics. Against a Texas State defense giving up 348.3 passing yards per game, a quarterback playing clean is the most plausible path to points if the ground game can't be found.

Why the game carries weight

Snapdragon Stadium used to settle these questions. San Diego State went 6-0 at home in 2025, and James Madison ended a seven-game home winning streak that SDSU listed as the 14th-longest active run in FBS. The road half of the ledger offers less comfort. SDSU is 4-8 away from home under Lewis, with six road losses by 20 or more points. Two of the next five weeks are away games, starting at Oregon State. Home wins are the ones this team has to bank.

The simulations make Saturday close to a coin flip, giving San Diego State a 52.9% chance. The standings consequence is real without being decisive. Win, and the Aztecs' odds of reaching the Pac-12 championship game sit around 19.7%; lose, and the same model puts them near 4%. Those are two separate branches of the same season, not a number that ticks down during the fourth quarter. Athletic director John David Wicker said in July that this program should be playing for a Pac-12 title in November. At 1-3 that already looks ambitious, and an 0-1 start in an eight-team league with a Boise State trip still on the schedule would make it something closer to fantasy.

Nothing anywhere else on Saturday's board moves San Diego State's math. This one is self-contained. Get a back healthy, get off the field on third down, and win the building.
