Sam Houston closes nonconference play at 1-3 with a defense to believe in

Locke answered two pick-sixes at Texas Tech and the defense forced four turnovers, but a 28-0 second half left the Bearkats idle in Week 5 with real questions.

Texas Tech linebacker Austin Romaine intercepted Brett Holloway's pass, ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown, then picked off Landyn Locke on the very next Sam Houston snap and returned that one 31 yards, becoming the first FBS player in 13 years to score on two straight opposing pass attempts. Thirteen seconds into the second quarter in Lubbock, Sam Houston trailed 21-0 in a game its offense had barely touched. And then Locke threw a 52-yard touchdown to Tim Burns Jr. and a 9-yard touchdown to Chris Reed, and the Bearkats walked off at halftime down 21-14. Texas Tech scored 28 unanswered points after the break and won 49-14, but the first thirty minutes are the part worth keeping.

Sam Houston is idle this week. That makes Week 5 a good moment to be honest about what the four-game nonconference block produced, because the block is finished and the answer is a 1-3 record with genuine flashes inside it.

What the defense earned

The most encouraging thing Sam Houston has done all year happened on the road against a ranked Power-conference team. Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay's rebuilt unit intercepted Texas Tech quarterback Hammond three times and recovered a fumble, four takeaways, and held the Red Raiders to 2 of 8 on third down. That was not a one-week outlier. Two weeks earlier the same group held Nicholls to 163 total yards, with six tackles for loss and eight stops from Dean Ford. Getting off the field and taking the ball away is now an identity rather than a hope.

What it did not fix is that Texas Tech still ran for 216-plus yards and scored 49 in the 49-14 win. Run containment against bigger, faster offenses is the one thing four games have not settled, and Conference USA will ask about it every week.

What the offense still owes

Phil Longo is still calling his own Air Raid, with the slot receiver central to everything it does, and that continuity is the whole bet of Year 2. Longo, coordinator Zack Patterson and Aughtry-Lindsay all returned from the staff that oversaw 2025. Against Nicholls it produced 619 total yards, the most of the Longo era at Sam Houston. Against Texas Tech it produced 269 yards at 4.1 a play and converted 5 of 16 third downs.

Locke's own line, 23 of 37 for 195 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, is the split screen in miniature. He got hit with the worst possible sequence and immediately threw two touchdowns. He also could not move the ball once the game stopped being close. Locke, who opened the season by throwing for a career-high 335 yards at Troy, remains the reason to watch; the sustained drive is the thing he has not yet produced against a defense that can play.

Where this leaves the conference schedule

No other game this week changes anything for Sam Houston. Conference USA opens October 8 at Liberty, where the model gives the Bearkats about a 2% chance. That game is a long shot, not a referendum. The season actually lives in the three home dates the simulations treat as coin flips, namely Western Kentucky in Week 7, New Mexico State in Week 8, and Kennesaw State in Week 11. The projection of 2.3 conference wins assumes Sam Houston splits the toss-ups and loses the rest. Winning all three of those home games is how 2.3 becomes something that feels like progress, and it depends on exactly the two unresolved items above, a run defense that holds up for four quarters and an offense that scores after halftime.

A 1-3 start against Troy, Tulsa, Nicholls and a ranked Texas Tech team is not a verdict on the year. It is four data points saying the defense arrived early and the offense arrived unevenly. Week 6 at Liberty is when we find out which one travels.

Full week-by-week numbers are in the interactive guide, and the methodology explains how the simulations work.
