Sac State won the possession battle and lost by 29

The Hornets held the ball longer and converted more third downs than UMass and still lost 35-6. An idle Week 5 is for fixing the self-inflicted part before Bowling Green.

Jackson Sharman threw 43 passes for 221 yards against Massachusetts on Saturday, one of them straight into a UMass defender who ran it back for a touchdown, and he took four sacks without throwing a scoring pass. Sacramento State held the ball longer than the Minutemen, 31:52 to 28:08, and converted 6 of 15 third downs to UMass's 3 of 10, and scored two field goals.

That combination, control of the clock, control of the downs, six points, is why Alonzo Carter's postgame answer was not about being physically overmatched. He called the errors "undisciplined and out of character," pointed to "too many trips into the red zone where we could not score touchdowns," and then credited the opponent. "Give UMass credit. They're good. They're not undefeated by accident." That is the same argument Carter made after North Dakota State built a 28-0 lead in the first 19 minutes, "you can't spot them 28 points", after which he said flatly, "Athletically, we can play with any team on our schedule." The Hornets outscored the Bison 7-3 in the second half of that one, which is the sort of detail that keeps the argument alive. Sacramento State lost to Massachusetts 35-6 in Week 4.

Sacramento State is idle this week. There is nothing on the Week 5 board that moves the Hornets' season, and no result elsewhere worth clearing an afternoon for. What the bye is actually for is the list Carter keeps reading from.

The self-inflicted list is real, and it is long

The defense had been getting by on takeaways. Against UMass it forced none while allowing 333 yards, 232 of them on the ground, with Watson scoring on runs of 13 and 32 yards. The Hornets handed over yardage too, nine penalties for 85 yards, including two 20-yard flags on a single UMass touchdown drive. Lose the takeaways and the yardage is just yardage. That is the cushion fans should assume is gone until this unit proves otherwise, and it belongs to a defense installed this year by a new coordinator on a staff where only offensive-line coach Kris Richardson carried over from the previous 13 assistants.

The quarterback situation is the piece nobody at Sac State can coach around. Carson Conklin's wrist has now cost him four straight games, with no return date announced. He is the passer who set school freshman records in 2024 and the reason anyone expected this offense to function, and he has not taken a snap in the stretch that was supposed to answer for it. Behind him the backfield is still auditioning, with Daniel Swinney 35 yards, Cincere Rhaney 34, Raiden Brown 24, no lead back.

What Bowling Green will actually settle

The Week 6 visit to Bowling Green on Oct. 9 is the first real conference road trip, on a schedule that also includes three more Eastern Time Zone games, three straight late-season weeknights and a finale at Hawai'i.

The model gives the Hornets a 43% chance at Bowling Green, about the same as its 43% at home against Ohio and behind only Ball State (57%) and Kent State (78%) on the remaining slate. Toledo at home sits at 13%. Projected conference record is 2.7 wins, 5.3 losses. Sacramento State cannot play in the MAC championship game during its two-year transition and is not ordinarily bowl-eligible either, so there is no trophy at the end of this. MAC coaches picked the Hornets 12th of 13 in the preseason poll, ahead of only the team that just beat them by 29 at home. Which is both the fair reading of where the program sits and the clearest measure of what Saturday cost.

Two weeks off buys Sacramento State time on the unglamorous items, fewer flags, red-zone trips that end in touchdowns, and a quarterback room that either gets Conklin back or gets Sharman through a game without handing over points. Carter's claim that the Hornets can hang with anyone on the schedule is testable Oct. 9 at Bowling Green. It has not been tested yet.
