Oregon State's month of near-misses and blowouts meets a real Pac-12 test at Colorado State

The Beavers routed UTEP 33-7 to snap a 10-game road skid. Now they open Pac-12 play at Colorado State, where a 129th-ranked defense meets the nation's third-best passing offense.

Oregon State's pass rush got to UTEP quarterback EJ Colson Jr. seven times Saturday night, five of those before halftime, and the Beavers built a 20-0 halftime lead on the way to a 33-7 road win. Braden Atkinson went 24 of 34 for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Jesse Legree caught six balls for 109 yards and two scores. AJ Newberry ran for 111 yards and a 12-yard touchdown, his first 100-yard game of the year.

That is as complete as this program has looked in years, and it ended a streak. The win snapped a 10-game Oregon State road losing skid. Two seasons of losing everywhere but Reser finally stopped in El Paso.

What four games have and haven't proven

Athlon set Oregon State's win total at 3.5 and both of its writers took the under. Four weeks later the Beavers are 2-2, and the two losses are the interesting part. Houston beat them by one possession after Oregon State pulled close late. Then Texas Tech, a 26.5-point favorite, trailed in the fourth quarter until Will Hammond hit Coy Eakin for 32 yards with 6:31 left and Oregon State's fourth-down failure deep in its own end handed the Red Raiders the clincher. Nobody projected a team that could stand in the ring with a College Football Playoff program for 53 minutes.

Neither win came against anything close to Pac-12 competition. Montana is FCS. UTEP entered 1-2. The rebuilt eight-team Pac-12 plays a seven-game round robin in 2026 with championship-game participants set after Week 12, which means Oregon State has played none of the games that will define its season and every remaining one counts the same.

That starts Saturday at Colorado State, 6 p.m. Eastern on USA Network. The simulations give Oregon State a 42% chance on the road, which is the closest thing to a coin flip the Beavers will see until they host San Diego State a week later.

Why this opponent fits what Oregon State does

Colorado State scores. The Rams average 40.3 points, 22nd nationally, and own a plus-7 turnover margin that ranks fifth. Their defense is the opposite, ranking 129th nationally in scoring defense, giving up 34.3 points, and 136th in total defense at 454 yards a game. Oregon State arrives third nationally in passing offense at 364.5 yards per game, with Atkinson at 1,421 yards and 11 touchdowns, production that already includes a six-touchdown afternoon against Montana that tied the Oregon State single-game record.

The Legree question got answered a week early. A UTEP beat reporter said before the game that the Miners planned to double-team Legree with a mix of man coverage and zone help. He caught two touchdowns and cleared 100 yards anyway, the best answer yet to whether his production survives a defense built to stop him. Shephard, asked whether Oregon State can keep both Atkinson and Legree this hot as defenses adjust, said flatly, "I don't know that we can," pointing to the other targets available when coverage tilts. A defense allowing 454 yards a game is the wrong one to find out on.

The worry runs the other direction. Oregon State is playing a new system, one veteran defensive back Sailasa Vadrawale III described as brand new before the season, still being learned by a roster that turned over wholesale. Seven sacks against UTEP is genuine progress; Colorado State's offense is the first one since Texas Tech capable of punishing a blown assignment. And the turnovers were even at El Paso. Kaleb Miles picked off Atkinson on a throw meant for Aeryn 'Bubba' Hampton before TJ Crandall intercepted Colson in the end zone in the fourth quarter. Against a team sitting at plus-7, breaking even will not be enough.

The memory, and what's at stake

The last time these programs met, Oregon State won 39-31 in double overtime at Corvallis in October 2024, stopping Colorado State on fourth-and-goal twice in the second overtime, the final one a batted-away fade to Tory Horton, after Anthony Hankerson's 25-yard touchdown run put the Beavers ahead. Hankerson finished 2025 with 1,086 yards and back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Newberry's 111 yards at UTEP is the first sign that this offense has someone who can take that kind of game over on the ground.

Oregon State's Pac-12 title odds sit at 4.4%. A win Saturday puts that near 7.9%; a loss drops it toward 2.0%. Those are not numbers to organize a season around. What matters more is that a 3.5-win projection has looked wrong for a month, and Fort Collins is the first place the Beavers can make it look wrong in a game that counts in the standings.
