Josh Fussell went down on the game's first series in Bloomington and was standing on crutches in street clothes before the first quarter ended, with cornerback Braden Turner not playing in the game due to injury. Chiles then dislocated a finger on his non-throwing hand, missed about a play, and came back to throw for 293 yards.
So the Wildcats are 2-1 and 0-1 in the Big Ten, having pushed a team that extended the FBS's longest active winning streak to 20 games. That is the number to hold onto when you look at this week's line. Northwestern was not outclassed. It was outnumbered. Northwestern lost to Indiana 29-23 in Week 4.
What Indiana actually exposed
Two things, and they point in opposite directions.
The good one is that the quarterback question is dead. That is the kind of afternoon that settles a job.
The bad one is the run game, on both sides of the ball. Chip Kelly was hired as offensive coordinator after last season to emphasize varying tempo, efficiency and smart decision-making; through four weeks the passing half is real and the running half vanished entirely against the first genuine Big Ten front Northwestern saw. Defensively, linebacker Braydon Brus said it himself after Indiana ran wild. "You're not going to win in the Big Ten if you can't stop the run." Nobody inside the program is pretending otherwise.
The health picture is worse than it has been all year. Guard Ezomo Oratokhai and defensive lineman Michael Kilbane have already been missing up front, and now Fussell and Turner are gone from a secondary that has to hold up Friday night.
The reason to still take this team seriously is the thing Braun kept selling in July. Eighty-eight percent of Northwestern's eligible returning snaps from 2025 came back. It is also the only insurance available when the injury list keeps growing.
The game
Penn State at Northwestern, Friday night, 8 p.m. ET on FOX, in the debut of the new Ryan Field. Exactly 100 years after the original stadium's first game. The model gives Northwestern a 27 percent chance.
Northwestern beat Penn State in Evanston last October. Penn State fired James Franklin the next day, less than 24 hours later, the third loss in a row for a preseason No. 2 team whose playoff hopes were gone. Northwestern did not make that decision. It was the last game before it.
Both teams arrive off losses, Penn State blew a 17-0 lead at home to Wisconsin, Northwestern lost at Indiana, which is why a rebuilt Penn State is only a field goal better than a 2-1 Northwestern at home.
Nikola Dugandzic is no longer a worry. The same punter who averaged 24.0 yards in the opener boomed a 72-yarder at Indiana, Northwestern's fourth-longest since at least 2004. In a close game against a team that just lost a two-score lead, field position is a real weapon.
The playoff math is honest. A win nudges Northwestern's CFP odds to about 3 percent, a loss leaves them under 1 percent.
