Jackson Williams caught a 33-yard touchdown from Nathan Hayes on North Dakota State's opening drive at Sacramento State. Darius Givance scooped up a loose ball and ran it back 24 yards for a score at 11:49 of the first quarter. Myles Mitchell punched in a 9-yard run with four seconds left in the period, DJ Scott broke a 42-yard touchdown early in the second, and the Bison led 28-0 before the Hornets had a point. Nineteen minutes of football decided a 31-10 game.
Then almost nothing happened. Hayes threw for 151 of his 210 yards in that first quarter, with Williams finishing at a career-high seven catches for 134. NDSU gained just 97 yards on four second-half drives, scored three points after halftime and lost the second half on the scoreboard, 7-3.
The defense has a version of the same problem. It has been getting off the field on giveaways rather than by stopping anybody. NDSU forced three turnovers at Sacramento State, including Givance's 24-yard fumble return for a touchdown, and committed none, but recorded no sacks. Turnovers are how that afternoon was won, and turnovers are the least repeatable thing a defense does. The one FBS opponent that refused to hand the ball over showed what happens next. Air Force ran for 207 yards and answered with fourth-quarter touchdown drives of 14 and 13 plays.
Wyoming is a fair test of both. The Cowboys are 2-2 but 1-0 in the Mountain West after beating Hawai'i 27-10 to reclaim the Paniolo Trophy, which is exactly the profile that makes an NDSU fast start insufficient. Wyoming is good enough to still be playing a live game in the third quarter, physical enough to grind a lead down. The model still likes the Bison at 87% at home, and it should. Just don't expect the outcome to be settled at halftime the way it was in Sacramento.
The subplots are worth the ticket. This is NDSU's first Mountain West home game as a conference member and its annual Homecoming date, and Wyoming has never played in the Fargodome. The programs have met exactly once, in Laramie in 2008, when Wyoming won 16-13. Tim Polasek ran Wyoming's offense from 2021 to 2023 under Craig Bohl and left 11 days after Jay Sawvel was promoted to the Wyoming head job; Sawvel was Bohl's defensive coordinator, and Wyoming's current defensive coordinator, Aaron Bohl, is Craig Bohl's son. Two branches of one coaching tree, and Polasek walking the opposite sideline from a building he helped run.
One piece of bookkeeping, because NDSU is barred from the Mountain West title game and the playoff during its two-year FBS transition, so the percentages attached to this game are measurements, not paths. A win leaves NDSU's simulated conference-title-game share near 73% and its playoff number around 4%; a loss puts those at roughly 42% and 1%. Those are two alternative outcomes of Saturday, not a sequence. Treat the percentages as a scoreboard for how good this team is, not a road to a trophy.
Elsewhere on the slate
Three other results move NDSU's conference math, and one of them is worth real attention.
UTEP at New Mexico: root for UTEP
This is the biggest outside swing of the week and the least likely. New Mexico is a direct competitor in the standings and NDSU visits Albuquerque in Week 8; a UTEP upset would be worth about +7.9 percentage points to the Bison's title-game odds. It happens about 4% of the time. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. Central on MW+. Enjoy it if it lands, plan around New Mexico winning.
San José State at Hawai'i: root for Hawai'i
The one you can reasonably expect to go your way. Hawai'i is a 59% home favorite, and a San José State loss, another league rival NDSU plays, in Week 13, is worth roughly +3.1 percentage points. It's a late one, 10:59 p.m. Central on MW+.
Marshall at James Madison: root for Marshall
Nothing to do with the conference race. James Madison is one of the non-power teams competing for the same national playoff consideration, so a Marshall upset nudges NDSU's playoff number by about +1.2 points. Marshall's chances are about 7%, on ESPNU at 2:45 p.m. Central.
NDSU hosts Wyoming at 2:30 p.m. Central on The CW Network. Full week at the interactive guide, math at methodology.
