Toa Fa'avae played every snap but the last one, completed 10 of 17 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown and ran for 57 more in New Mexico's 42-18 win over New Mexico State, and afterward Eck named him the starter going forward, closing the Fa'avae/Moga split. The Lobos turned a 14-3 halftime lead into a rout with 21 unanswered third-quarter points. Eck also explained the mechanics behind it. He cut the offensive play menu "from 80 to around 60" to streamline what Fa'avae has to process.
That is the version of New Mexico that opens Mountain West play. A settled quarterback running a shorter list, not an audition. It is also a narrower offense than the one the coaching staff drew up in February, and the reason is on the injury report.
The receiver the plan was built around
New Mexico brought in Troy Omeire as a transfer after he caught 31 passes for 514 yards and five touchdowns at UNLV in 2025. Four games in, he has not been that receiver. Against the Aggies he had two catches for 22 yards before a second-quarter ankle sprain forced him off the field with assistance, and no team update on his availability for UTEP had been issued as of Saturday. Bailen George supplied the explosive plays instead, a 68-yarder that set up a touchdown at the 3 and a 37-yard third-and-9 conversion.
So the watch list Saturday is short and specific. The question is whether Omeire warms up, and if he does not, whether George and the rotating backfield can carry a trimmed playbook against a conference defense. Kiefer Sibley started at running back but Scottre Humphrey still led the team with 104 yards and two scores, and James Laubstein added two more short touchdowns. The distribution keeps changing week to week. It keeps working.
The defense, with the usual asterisk
Spence Nowinsky's unit was the nation's most improved rushing defense and third-most improved scoring defense down the stretch in 2025, and it has kept producing the same signature. Tavian Combs and Austin Brawley intercepted passes, Elijah Brody recovered a fumble after a Jalen McIver sack, Jaxton Eck posted nine tackles and 2.5 for loss, and Xavier Slayton added two sacks. New Mexico has now gone four straight games without committing a turnover and enters conference play at plus-14 in turnover margin, which is the single biggest reason a 3-1 team projects the way it does.
The caveat has also repeated. New Mexico allowed a fourth-quarter stretch in which Aggies backup Adam Damante went 16-of-19 for 162 yards and two touchdowns once the game was decided. Against UTEP it likely will not cost anything; in November at Nevada or Wyoming, it might.
New Mexico vs UTEP, Saturday at 2 p.m. MT on MW+
The model gives New Mexico a 96% chance to win this one, and the schedule explains why. The Lobos rode the rivalry rout to 3-1, while UTEP lost 33-7 at home to Oregon State.
This is also the first home game since Week 2, and the streak at University Stadium matters to the program's self-image. New Mexico pushed it to nine games with the Mercyhurst win, having already passed the eight-game home run of 1938-40 earlier in September. The trips to Oklahoma and New Mexico State said nothing about it either way, and UTEP is the first chance since September to add to the streak.
A win is worth more than the margin suggests. New Mexico's Mountain West title-game odds sit at roughly 56% if it beats UTEP and around 31% if it does not. That is the gap between a team on schedule and a team that has already spent its margin for error in the conference race.
What else to watch Saturday
Wyoming at North Dakota State: root for Wyoming
A Wyoming upset in Fargo would be worth about 4.2 percentage points to New Mexico's title-game odds, the largest outside swing on the board, because North Dakota State is a Mountain West team New Mexico hosts in Week 8, and every league loss the Bison take is one fewer contender ahead of the Lobos. It is also unlikely. Wyoming has about a 13% chance. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m. MT on The CW Network. Fun to check in on, not something to build the afternoon around.
San José State at Hawai'i: root for Hawai'i
This one is closer to a coin flip and easier to get. Hawai'i is a 59% home favorite, and a Hawai'i win is worth about 3.1 percentage points to New Mexico's chances of reaching the conference title game by putting a loss on San José State, another league rival the Lobos visit in Week 9. Kickoff is 9:59 p.m. MT on MW+, which is late, and you will likely know how New Mexico's own night went long before it ends.
