NC State finally closed one out, and Louisville will press on the same seam

The Wolfpack survived a 21-point lead shrinking to a 31-31 tie against App State. Louisville's big-play offense arrives Saturday with NC State already 0-1 in the ACC.

Duke Scott took a handoff with the game tied 31-31 and ran 16 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 5:08 left, the end of a possession NC State built almost entirely out of runs by Scott and Davion Gause. Jackson Vick broke up an App State fourth-down pass, then a Kanoah Vinesett field goal made it a two-possession game, and the Wolfpack won 41-31 at home after leading 21-0 in the second quarter and 28-7 at halftime, a lead App State erased with 14 points in under two minutes in the fourth quarter, two touchdown catches on either side of a recovered onside kick.

If that sounds familiar, it should. A week earlier NC State led Vanderbilt 24-7 and lost. Two straight games with a big lead surrendered is now the thing this team is, and Dave Doeren said so himself, calling last week's loss "the hardest finish of a football game I've been a part of in my career" and saying the team's overall physicality and ability to finish the game was the biggest takeaway. The difference between the two weeks was one clean four-minute stretch. That is worth something. It is not yet worth calling fixed.

What actually got better, and what didn't

Scott is the real development, with 25 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns, the first time this season he has carried a heavy workload without the efficiency falling apart, after 7 carries for 20 yards at Virginia and 16 for 50 against Vanderbilt. That matters against Louisville specifically. The Cardinals rank 14th in the ACC against the run, giving up more than 165 rushing yards a game, and NC State's staff has every reason to hand it to Scott 25 more times.

The defense is the problem that hasn't moved. One sack, three tackles for loss, and App State outgained NC State in each of the final three quarters after the Wolfpack dominated the first. Doeren's postgame assessment was blunt. "On defense in particular, we got to execute better," citing coverage and pass-rush technique. Louisville is the worst possible opponent for that. The Cardinals have already produced six touchdowns of at least 50 yards this season, and quarterback Lincoln Kienholz threw for 324 yards and scored three total touchdowns against Wake Forest. A mobile quarterback aimed at a defense analysts have flagged as vulnerable to exactly that.

The model gives NC State a 40% chance at home. That is a live underdog, not a long shot, and it sits at the awkward crossing point of two things. NC State opened ACC play with a loss at Virginia and is 0-1 in the league, while Louisville is 2-2 overall, same as NC State. Lose this and the Wolfpack are 0-2 in the ACC with seven league games left, which is a long way below where the conference placed them. ACC media picked NC State seventh in the 17-team league, with CJ Bailey fourth in preseason player-of-the-year voting but off the preseason All-ACC team. Seventh was supposed to be a floor. An 0-2 start makes it a ceiling.

The championship math is thin either way and worth keeping in proportion. A win leaves NC State's title-game odds around 2.3%, a loss knocks them to roughly 0.2%. Neither branch is why you watch. You watch because this is the week you find out whether the closing drive against App State was a group of players learning something or one good sequence against a Sun Belt opponent.

Scott can take 20-plus handoffs against a run defense that thin, and Louisville does not need many snaps to score, so the front seven has to reach Kienholz in a way it hasn't reached anybody yet. Otherwise this ends where the last two Saturdays ended, with NC State trying to hold a lead it should never have put in danger. The Wolfpack have been there twice and got it right once, and doing it against an offense this explosive is what would make the App State finish look like a habit instead of an escape.
