Navy led 20-17 early in the fourth quarter at UAB when Marlin Dean came free and knocked the ball out of Jackson Gutierrez's hands; Chris Spencer fell on it at the Navy 48, and on the very next snap Bam McReynolds ran 48 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Navy got the ball back and fumbled again, Michael Barrow losing it near the UAB 44. It finished UAB 24, Navy 20, and a team that had outgained the Blazers 353-290 and held the ball for 34:22 to 25:38 lost anyway.
That is the pattern. Navy out-gained and out-possessed UAB and lost anyway, and the difference has been giving the ball away late. A preseason poll of American media organized by At The Roost had Navy first, and the gap between that and 0-2 is almost entirely fourth-quarter ball security. Navy lost to UAB 24-20 in Week 4.
Noon Saturday, CBS, Falcon Stadium
Navy visits Air Force at noon Eastern on CBS, and the model gives the Midshipmen a 49.2% chance, a true coin flip on the road. The conference math barely moves either way, because this is not a conference game. A win nudges Navy's championship-game odds to about 4.4%, a loss to roughly 2.9%. Neither number changes much about Navy's season.
The trophy is what actually moves on Saturday. Navy has won consecutive Commander-in-Chief's Trophies and consecutive games against Army, and the defense of that streak starts here, with the Army leg waiting at MetLife Stadium on Dec. 12. Nothing that happened at UAB touched it. Everything Saturday does.
Falcon Stadium is also where the recent series turned. Navy snapped a four-game losing streak to Air Force with a 34-7 win there in fall 2024, then took the 2025 meeting 34-31 in Annapolis for its first back-to-back wins in the series since 2012-13. Troy Calhoun is in his 20th season running Air Force; Brian Newberry is in his fourth at Navy and 26-12, with consecutive 10-win seasons behind him. Continuity against momentum, and Navy's momentum in this specific fixture is real even if September has not been.
The quarterback question is genuinely open
Braxton Woodson, the senior captain who entered the fall as the starter after three career starts and a 2025 line of 414 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 44 carries, hurt the ankle in the third quarter at Florida Atlantic and has not played since. He dressed and warmed up at UAB as a game-time decision, did not play, and is targeting a return against Air Force, with coaches expecting him to reclaim the job once healthy.
Except Gutierrez made that less simple. In his first career start he rushed 34 times for a career-high 134 yards and a touchdown and completed 4 of 13 passes for a career-high 104 yards. The first Navy player since Blake Horvath to clear 100 rushing and 100 passing in the same game, and the first Navy quarterback to rush for 100-plus in a starting debut since Ricky Dobbs in 2008. No one has said how the snaps divide. Watch the first series. If Woodson takes it and stays out there, the rotation question answers itself. If Navy alternates, it has a second problem to manage on a day when it needs clean exchanges more than anything.
The front can win this
Air Force runs the ball, so this is where Navy's rebuilt defense gets its best chance. MarcAnthony Parker recorded 10 tackles, three sacks and three tackles for loss at UAB, Navy's most sacks in a game since John Marshall's four against UCF in 2022, and Coleman Cauley added seven tackles. That front is doing this without Landon Robinson, the 2025 American Defensive Player of the Year who led the team in tackles for loss, sacks and hurries, and it is doing it under a changed staff, with Eric Lewis promoted to defensive coordinator and Ricky Brown to co-coordinator after P.J. Volker left, while Drew Cronic, in his third year running the offense, is the one coordinator who did not change, which is why Navy's fourth-quarter fumbles read as execution rather than an offense still learning its own system. That defense closed 2025 by holding Memphis to 288 yards, Army to 202 and Cincinnati to 239. Against an option team, disruption at the point of attack is exactly the currency.
So the shape of a good Saturday is unglamorous. It is Navy grinding out possessions the way it did in Birmingham, the front stuffing Air Force's dive game, and nobody putting the ball on the ground in the fourth quarter. Do that and the trophy bid is alive and the record starts looking like the yardage. Don't, and this becomes the third straight week of explaining a loss Navy mostly earned the right to win.
