Down 24-3 at halftime, Iowa State did climb back into it as Jaylen Raynor's 8-yard touchdown run and a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Overby, set up by a converted fourth-and-12, made it 24-17 early in the fourth quarter, before Utah answered with a 61-yard drive capped by Devon Dampier's 13-yard throw to Parker, and Jackson Bennett intercepted Raynor on Iowa State's next play to seal a 31-17 Utah win in Ames. Jimmy Rogers did not hunt for a softer explanation afterward. His defense, and the linebackers specifically, "didn't tackle well enough", missed tackles in space "showed up everywhere," and Utah finished with 411 total yards.
Rogers was talking about the one part of this team that had been going right all season.
The front had been the good news
Jesse Bobbit's four-man front arrived with three encouraging games behind it. Against Southeast Missouri, ends Isaac Terrell and Caden Crawford lined up outside tackles Max Baloun and Bryson Lamb, Terrell had three of Iowa State's six sacks, and the defense piled up 12 tackles for loss. At Iowa the same four starters produced no sacks or tackles for loss, but the Hawkeyes' longest run went nine yards and they gained 93 on the ground. Bowling Green managed 186 total yards, 3.6 per play and 2 of 12 on third down, with five three-and-outs.
None of that was tackling in open space against a real Big 12 back, and Rogers' complaint was not about the four down linemen. It was about what happened behind them once Utah's runners got past the line. A front can win its gap and still lose the play if nobody finishes it eight yards downfield.
West Virginia's offense runs through one back, and Iowa State's linebackers will have to meet him in space all afternoon. Jacksonville State transfer Cam Cook led the FBS with 1,659 rushing yards in 2025 and was a 2026 Preseason All-Big 12 pick, the most productive returning power runner in the conference, arriving at Jack Trice for Iowa State's homecoming game. Kickoff is 11 a.m. CT on TNT.
What to actually watch is whether Cyclone linebackers arrive square and bring Cook down on first contact, or whether he keeps turning three-yard gains into eight. If they finish those plays, the Utah film stays a bad night. If they do not, every Big 12 opponent left on the schedule will keep running at the same spot.
There is help possibly coming. Cornerback Jaheim Singletary missed his second straight game in concussion protocol against Utah, but he was described as in good spirits and progressing with a chance to play against West Virginia, with Beni Ngoyi practicing fully and expected to be available in his place. In a game likely to be decided by runs that reach the second level, getting a starting corner back in the tackling rotation matters more than usual.
The offense's own unanswered question
Raynor threw two interceptions in a game for the first time this season, the first-half Hail Mary that Utah linebacker Johnathan Hall picked off, then a fourth-quarter interception by a Utah defender that sealed the loss, and finished 21-of-40 for 205 yards with a touchdown plus his rushing score. Aiden Flora was held to 14 yards on his first four carries and finished with 54 rushing yards, a long way from the roughly 200 rushing yards he had against Bowling Green a week earlier. Flora's read afterward was that the offense needs to trust itself.
There is a discipline thread here too. At Iowa, all six Iowa State penalties came after halftime, and Rogers called the hidden yardage costly; against Utah the second half was where the comeback stalled rather than where the team came apart, with Rogers saying, "I think we came out and shot ourselves in the foot." Second-half cleanliness in a game Iowa State should control is worth tracking.
The game itself
Iowa State fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12 and hosts West Virginia next; the Mountaineers come in 3-1 and also 0-1 in the conference after a 41-24 home loss to Oklahoma State, so Saturday is the first chance either side has to bank a league win.
The model gives Iowa State a 90% chance to do it, which is the correct way to think about this one. Iowa State is a heavy favorite at home, and a loss that would cost far more than the win gains. Win, and the Cyclones' playoff path sits around 4.7% with title-game odds near 5.6%. Lose, and those fall to roughly 1% and under 1% respectively. That is not a game to sweat the result of. It is a game to watch the tackling in.
Texas Tech at Colorado: root for Colorado
The only outside game worth your afternoon. No. 12 Texas Tech at Colorado kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX, and Colorado winning is a genuine long shot at 7.7%. It matters because Texas Tech is a direct competitor in the Big 12 standings. With a Colorado upset, Iowa State's conference title-game odds land near 9.4%; with a Texas Tech win, near 4.8%. That 4.5-percentage-point swing is the largest single outside effect on the board, and it costs nothing to enjoy from the couch.
