Illinois is down to an emergency right guard, and Purdue still can't punish it

Illinois' run game kept working at Ohio State behind an emergency right guard, and Purdue's defense has stopped nobody, so the Homecoming question is whether this looks as easy as it should.

Eddie Tuerk, a converted defensive lineman, ran onto the field at right guard in Columbus the moment second-start guard Champ Smith left the game, and because Maika Matelau, Brandon Henderson, Dezmond Schuster and TJ McMillen were all already unavailable, Tuerk became Illinois' fourth different right-guard option of the season. Ohio State won 42-19. Katin Houser was sacked three times as Illinois totaled 462 yards of offense, and Illinois left Ohio Stadium at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten.

The guard spot has not been one injury away from settling; it has been unsettled since September. McMillen fractured a foot against Duke and was announced out for the rest of the season, and the line has churned through replacements ever since. Back in the opener, Christian Martin, Maika Matelau and Jake Renfro were all making their first Illinois starts up front. Nobody in Champaign should expect a tidy five-man answer by Saturday afternoon.

What makes this week interesting is that the run game kept working anyway. Illinois averaged 6.0 yards a carry at Ohio State despite its depleted line, and Aidan Laughery gained 113 yards on 11 carries, with four different Illinois players recording runs of 12-plus yards. Whatever the line has failed to do in protection, it has created creases, and Laughery has hit them.

Now point that at Purdue. The Boilermakers are 1-3 after Notre Dame beat them 49-10 on Saturday, a game in which Purdue rushed for 40 yards and its defense gave up 444. A week earlier, UCLA converted 11 of 14 third downs against Purdue, including seven conversions of 3rd-and-7 or longer. That is not one bad afternoon against an elite opponent; that is a defense nobody has needed a plan to beat. If Illinois' patchwork front can simply hold its assignments, Laughery and a heavy diet of runs should move the ball, and Houser should get cleaner pockets than he saw last week.

The other half of the game is the part Bielema has already talked about publicly. Bobby Hauck was hired to install the aggressive 3-3-5 he ran at Montana, where his defenses finished in the Big Sky's top five in scoring defense, total defense and sacks every year from 2018 through 2025. That installation has not held up yet. Illinois allowed 518 yards and six touchdowns at Ohio State with no takeaways and exactly one tackle for loss all game. Bielema called the defense's overall performance "unacceptable" and, addressing an in-game lapse in which Illinois had only nine defenders on the field, said "that's got to be 100 percent on me," adding that the staff has to "look at what we're doing defensively to make sure we're not doing too much." Watch for a shorter call sheet Saturday. Fewer exotic looks, more people lined up correctly. Matthew Bailey, whose 14 tackles were a career high and the one individually excellent defensive performance of the day, should be the one player you can locate on every snap.

Kickoff is 3:15 p.m. CT on BTN, and this is Illinois' 116th annual Homecoming game, with the Cannon on the line for a third straight year in Champaign. The model gives Illinois an 88.6% chance to win, which is the point. This is a game Illinois should win comfortably, and the thing worth watching is whether it looks comfortable. Whether the run game controls the afternoon and the defense makes Purdue punt instead of trading yards. Nothing on the rest of Saturday's board moves Illinois' season, so the only scoreboard that matters is the one in front of you.
