With the game tied 14-14 early in the second quarter Saturday, Isaiah Stone took a kickoff at his own goal line and ran it back 100 yards, a play Georgia State's own release called a tie of the program record for longest kickoff return and a new school record for the longest run in program history. The Panthers never trailed again, scored 21 unanswered points spanning the second and third quarters on Lanear McCrary Jr.'s 1-yard run and two Cameran Brown touchdown passes to Rodshaun Dorsey of 18 and 50 yards, and beat Northern Illinois 35-14 at home to finish September 3-1. Then Dell McGee stood up afterward and said special teams, not the offense or defense, carried the win. He said, "I feel like our special teams really carried us this game. We had a huge return by Isaiah Stone that sparked our team."
That is an unusually honest read from a head coach with a winning record in hand, and it is the right frame for Saturday. Northern Illinois out-gained Georgia State 432-342 and held the ball longer. The Panthers' first score came one minute in, after Northern Illinois fumbled the opening kickoff and Georgia State recovered at the NIU 4. Two of the biggest swings in a 21-point win happened on kick coverage.
Georgia State is a 67% home favorite in our model, a notable jump for a team Sun Belt coaches picked seventh in the seven-team East, with Old Dominion picked second.
Why year three carries this much weight
Georgia State went 7-6 and beat Utah State in the 2023 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, then fell to 3-9 in 2024. McGee, hired in February 2024, is in his third season. That history is why a 3-1 September feels like more than four games, and also why McGee's own caution matters. The program needs repeatable offense and defense, not one return.
The defense is the part of the rebuild that has actually held up. Cam Clark and John Haneline came in as new co-defensive coordinators for 2026, replacing the coordinator who ran the 2025 unit, while Hue Jackson stayed put on offense, so the defense is the side of the ball where a genuine change was made and where progress should be visible first. It has been. Northern Illinois converted just 3-of-13 on third down. And the run defense that gave up 304 yards at UCF held up again. Telly Johnson Jr. got 85 yards and a touchdown and Jaiduan Cranford 43, but Northern Illinois netted only 112 as a team, less than its backs' combined 138.
The offense is the murkier half. Georgia State is still replacing Ted Hurst, the first-team All-Sun Belt receiver who caught 71 balls for 1,004 yards in 2025 before going No. 84 overall, the highest NFL draft pick in program history. Brown was efficient against Northern Illinois, 14-of-21, 148 yards, two touchdowns, but threw an interception. Ball security is the thing that flipped the UCF game, and it has not been cleaned up.
What Saturday actually settles
Old Dominion has beaten Georgia State in six of their seven meetings since 2010, including 2024 and 2025; the Panthers' lone win was 31-17 at home in 2022. Georgia State has not been the favored team in this series in recent memory, and Vegas agrees with the model this time, Georgia State opened at -1.5.
So the fun version of Saturday is a favorite finally cashing in against a team that has spent a decade taking these games. The question that matters more is whether the Panthers score on offensive drives. If Dorsey and Brown build the margin and the defense keeps getting off the field on third down again, the September record starts looking like the program rather than the kick return. If it takes another special-teams touchdown to separate, McGee's postgame framing will still be the most accurate thing anyone has said about this team.
Conference math argues for urgency rather than patience. The projection has Georgia State around 3.5 conference wins, and the schedule ahead includes trips to James Madison, Arkansas State, App State and Marshall where the model gives the Panthers no better than 39%. Home games against Old Dominion, Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern are where a bowl-adjacent season gets built. This is the first of them.
